Associate Chair for Clinical Services

Classification Minimum Requirements:

MD or DO degree with board certification in Anesthesiology. Eligible for or holding a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.

Job Description:
  • For the Main Operating Rooms, FSC and CSC and all NORA areas: 
    • Manages the clinical operations and anesthesia providers (physician faculty, AAs and CRNAs) in their respective clinical areas, assisted by each service chief
    • Working with Core and Fellowship Program Directors, make certain of appropriate assignment of the residents and fellows to their respective areas of rotation. 
    • Ensure that subspecialty service chiefs staff all surgical and nonsurgical satellite locations, including cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia team, liver transplantation team, pediatric anesthesia team, obstetric team, orthopaedic and regional anesthesia teams, neuroanesthesia team, and others. 
    • Oversees all NORA areas throughout the hospital with the assistance of NORA service chief. 
    • Oversee the anesthesia preoperative evaluation with the assistance of the medical director,
    • Mentor faculty members in the clinical area so they can become our leaders of tomorrow. 
    • Assists Chair with selection and evaluation of each service Chief
    • Trains new service chiefs
  • With the assistance of the relevant service chief, oversee the operations of the Divisions of Critical Care Medicine and Pain Medicine
  • With the assistance of the scheduling manager, produce the Clinical Assignment Schedule for all aspects of the Department – with a goal of having the schedule available at least 4 months in advance
  • Chair the Service Chiefs’ Meeting – which should occur at least quarterly
  • Serves as a member of the Departmental Executive Committee
  • As designated by the Chair, deal with personnel issues (Faculty, AAs and CRNAs)
  • As designated by the Chair, deal with intradepartmental personnel issues involving Faculty, CRNAs, AAs
  • Advocates for the faculty, residents, fellows, AAs, CRNAs with the OR Medical Director
  • Attend monthly PPOC meetings and work closely with the Departmental Physician Directors for Quality to assure quality and safety issues are promptly and appropriately addressed
    • Work closely with other Department PDQs to make certain that quality and safety issues that involve other departments as well as the Department of Anesthesiology are effectively addressed.
  • Serve as a member of the Departmental Peer Review Committee (may chair the committee in the absence of the PDQ)
  • With the assistance of the OR medical director, make certain that the AODs appropriately prioritize cases and make daily OR assignments appropriately utilizing the strengths of each faculty member, resident, AA and CRNA.
  • With the assistance of the OR medical director, make certain that OR anesthesia related equipment is appropriately maintained and that new / replacement equipment are ordered and prioritized appropriately by the hospital
  • In the absence of the Chair, functions as acting chair of the Department
Expected Salary:

$60,000

Required Qualifications:

Qualifications refer to evidence-based or demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences required for the role. For TEAMS positions the required qualifications should reflect Classification Minimum Requirements.  For Faculty roles, these qualifications may reflect college-specific requirements needed for success in the role.

Preferred:
  • Education & Certification

    • MD or DO degree with board certification in Anesthesiology.

    • Eligible for or holding a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

  • Leadership & Administrative Experience

    • Demonstrated success in managing large, complex clinical operations (ORs, NORA, subspecialty services).

    • Prior leadership experience as service chief, division chief, or similar administrative role.

    • Proven ability to develop and mentor faculty and trainees.

  • Clinical Expertise

    • Broad clinical experience across multiple anesthesiology subspecialties; ability to understand and support specialized teams.

    • Familiarity with perioperative systems, including pre-op evaluation, OR scheduling, and resource management.

  • Quality & Safety Focus

    • Experience leading or participating in quality improvement, patient safety, or peer review initiatives.

    • Ability to collaborate with hospital leadership to address equipment, safety, and system-level challenges.

  • Interpersonal & Communication Skills

    • Strong skills in conflict resolution, consensus-building, and advocating for diverse provider groups (faculty, CRNAs, AAs, trainees).

    • Effectiveness in interdisciplinary collaboration with surgical, nursing, and hospital leadership.

  • Strategic & Organizational Abilities

    • Proven capacity to balance operational demands with long-term planning (e.g., creating schedules months in advance).

    • Ability to serve as Acting Chair when needed, with readiness to represent the department at institutional meetings.
