SUMMARY
The Police Investigation Tech position is primarily responsible for answering police telephone inquiries, gathering information from victims and witnesses, completing appropriate reports and supplements, entering reports into the Records Management System, and conducting background research on cases.Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver standard of professionalism while interacting with internal & external customers.
- Answer incoming phone calls to division office, retrieve division voicemail messages, notify officers & supervisors of messages via e-mail.
- Handle miscellaneous phone or citizen walk in requests to include providing copies of KBCOPS reports & Crash reports by fax, e-mail, or hard copy for walk-in citizens.
- Direct citizens to appropriate Court Offices, City Offices, or other CMPD agencies as needed & advise citizens on police procedures or City of Charlotte policies as needed.
- Order office supplies from external vendors & CMPD Property Control (MUNIS)
- Maintain inventory list and make supplies available for officers and supervisors within the division.
- Receive, copy, and file subpoenas electronically and within appropriate folders located in sergeants’ offices.
- Audit all outgoing subpoenas to ensure accuracy and consistency prior to submission to Court Liaison
- Utilize Microsoft Excel to log outgoing subpoena information alphabetically by officer name, code number, CR number, date, and court date.
- Receive, audit, and distribute ride-a-long requests, ensure request is signed and returned, complete closeout for ride-a-longs.
- Maintain MSDS book for office chemicals.
- Manage daily chart to track the number of reports, phone calls answered, and walk-in visits.
- Sign-in and check-out outside personnel.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Create, enter, and code accurate information into a variety of computer data bases to include the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the State of North Carolina’s Department of Criminal Information (DCI) system.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Graduate
- U.S Citizen
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to deliver clear & concise communication.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
- Ability to research, compile, and prepare report manuals, electronic correspondences, and other information required by management or governmental agencies.
- Knowledge of principles for assessing & processing customer needs, quality standards for services, and customer satisfaction evaluation
- Knowledge of administrative/clerical procedures
- Knowledge of various computer systems such as: Microsoft Office, MUNIS, and call reporting technology
- Knowledge of general office procedures and administrative terminology
- Problem-solving skills
ADA and Other Requirements:
- Positions in this class typically require grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Physical Requirements:
- Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time.
- Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks.
- Adequate vision, hearing, and speech required.
Sensory Requirements:
- Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, tabulating data.
- Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in return could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
- Comprehensive written information in work-related documents.
- Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions; moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as officers, community members, victims, etc.); and frequent exposure to computer screens, files, and phone.
Other Requirements:
Successfully complete and pass a pre-employment requirement(s). Failure to successfully pass all segments of the pre-employment evaluation process will result in disqualification from further consideration under this vacancy announcement.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
