Job Summary:

Supervises and coordinates the overall recreation program for the County with responsibility for a comprehensive recreational program in an assigned large geographic area composed of recreation complexes and community facilities; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position).

  • Plans and coordinates all recreational activities in an assigned geographical district;
  • Supervises and coordinates recreation staff of centers in the district in the development and implementation of community recreation programs;
  • Visits and observes programs and conditions of facilities and playgrounds in the district;
  • Orients new workers and evaluates work performance;
  • Places and supervises volunteer workers;
  • Coordinates departmental programs with other private and public agencies;
  • Supervises recreation programs and co-sponsored programs;
  • Coordinates sports programs, registers children for teams, collects fees, acquires, and trains coaches;
  • Schedules and runs various tournaments throughout the year;
  • Prepares publicity material on various recreational activities for newspapers, radio and other media;
  • Promotes interest and provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public;
  • Attends meetings, workshops, and institutes and serves on committees;
  • Keeps records and prepares reports; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience: 

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in recreation, physical education, sociology, or a related field; and

  • three (3) years of specialized work experience, and
  • one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Qualifying Specialized Work Experience:

Professional work experience in planning, organizing, directing or leading groups of children and/or adults in recreational activities.

Qualifying Supervisory Work Experience:

Professional work experience which include planning, directing, assigning and reviewing the work of others; advising subordinates on difficult program areas; timing and scheduling subordinate work; and training and developing new employees.
