We are seeking a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Specialist to join our team in VICTORIA, British Columbia, Canada.
The Senior Cloud Infrastructure Specialist works closely with the Hybrid Infrastructure team and other key functions across the organization to design, deploy and manage the operations of cloud infrastructure with focus on continuous improvement, high availability, security and latest innovations. This is a technical leadership position, responsible for both hands-on technical work and providing formal supervision, coaching, and mentorship to the team. As a cloud infrastructure specialist, this position will be involved in the Corporation's transformation from traditional on-premise solutions to deployments to cloud infrastructure, with a focus on Microsoft Azure and Oracle OCI technologies. The Senior Cloud Infrastructure Specialist will play a key part in projects underway as well as ongoing sustainment and future improvements.
The primary focus of the role is (1) cloud capacity planning and management, including cost optimization (e. g. FinOps), (2) cloud observability and monitoring, and (3) maintaining and operating a reliable and scalable cloud infrastructure.
Hybrid Work Model
This position is located in our Victoria, BC office. You will have the flexibility to work part of the time on-campus and part of the time off-campus. The requirement for in-office presence is a minimum of 40% of your schedule in a month. Additional requirements are determined by the role functions and operational needs of each business area.
- Provide expert knowledge on cloud infrastructure and platforms, to ensure our organization achieves its goals for cloud adoption. This involves translating cloud strategy and architecture into efficient, resilient, and secure technical implementations that align with industry standards.
- Drive cloud cost and consumption governance and management through application and adoption of FinOps best practices to ensure transparent and optimal cloud resource usage and cost management.
- Deploy and maintain observability and monitoring solutions (such as Azure Monitor and Dynatrace) to enhance system visibility, proactive incident response, and optimal capacity planning.
- Research and prototype new tools and technologies to enhance cloud platform capabilities and provide recommendations and advice to senior management on evaluations of alternative solutions, risk assessment and cost benefit analysis.
- Supervises staff including assignment of work, development and evaluation of performance plans, approval of leave, response to grievances and initiation of discipline processes as well as determines the goals and objectives of the team to achieve the defined outcomes.
- Monitors vendor performance and provides direction to contractors to ensure that agreed upon terms and conditions are met; works directly with contractors to resolve service, quality assurance and related performance issues. Assists with contract negotiation and/or preparation as needed.
- Leads a project team to deliver major projects that involve overseeing sub-projects and/or multiple delivery components (e.g., governance, operations, customer service delivery) in accordance with project management standards.
- Enforce cloud security frameworks and ensure adherence to internal policies and external regulatory standards.
- Develop and manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and cloud resources configuration solutions (such as Azure Resource Manager), enabling scalable, consistent, and auditable deployments.
- Engineer automated workflows for infrastructure provisioning and configuration to streamline operations and reduce manual intervention.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and change logs.
- Provide senior level expertise in optimizing infrastructure integration and connectivity in all scenarios: single cloud, multi-cloud and hybrid.
- Collaborate with IT Engineering, DevOps, Security, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions that are aligned with the Corporation’s overall strategy.
Must have
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems and/or an equivalent experience in a related field.
- Three or more years of hands-on experience with cloud observability, monitoring and performance analysis tools, such as Dynatrace and Azure Monitor.
- Three or more years of experience using FinOps principles and implementing and managing cloud cost optimization strategies.
- Five or more years of experience in managing Azure/OCI cloud infrastructure including, but not limited to virtual servers, virtual desktops, storage, networking and connectivity services (e.g., subnetting, route tables, security groups, virtual networking, VPN, transit gateways, optimizing for egress costs), identity and access management, IAC, endpoint manager, and other cloud services and resources.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience may be considered.
Nice to have:
- Experience leading and supervising IT professionals which may include recruitment, coaching, supporting development, and managing performance.
- Experience with cloud storage, backup and recovery solutions.
- Cloud provider certifications.
- Experience working with a variety of vendors and third parties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have working knowledge of cloud computing, networking, storage and backup technologies, Microsoft Azure platform and/or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure).
- Analyzing cloud spending and optimizing resources (FinOps)
- Knowledge of cloud monitoring, alerting tools and observability concepts.
- Knowledge of Identity and Access management (e.g. Entra ID, RBAC, SSO, Group policy, enterprise applications, applications roles and assignments, etc.).
- Cloud security (e.g., key management services, encryption, other core security services/controls the organization uses).
- System design, planning, implementation, and documentation skills.
- Knowledge of ITIL processes and tools.
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), including the ability to adapt style to a nontechnical audience.
- Approachable and collaborative.
