To perform journey-level installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; perform related work.
Department Overview:Facilities Operations and Maintenance supports the university’s strategic mission by professionally maintaining safe, functional and attractive facilities and grounds, while also providing quality support services to the campus community.
Level Scope:Regularly works on tasks that are varied and complex. Applies full range and job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs; may serve as lead; performs broad and/or focused assignments under general supervision; originality and ingenuity are often required to help establish procedures in functional area; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks.
Essential Functions:● Analyzes, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on all HVAC installations, fire and boiler alarm and surveillance control systems (high and low pressure); defines and implements preventive maintenance programs for motors, steam condensate return traps, pumps, controls, compressors, auxiliary heating and cooling systems, and related devices; compiles reports for changes, including reporting costs, estimating values, and justifying changes; reviews work of construction; maintains air distribution and balance systems; adds chemicals and analyzes water treatment for chill water and heating systems; plans and installs auxiliary control systems; prepares system for winter carry-over and cold weather conditions; calibrates pipe and vent sizes; may design and install sheet metal; installs/inspects thermostats, and electrical wiring of furnaces, unit heaters, and cooling units; reviews new designs and concepts.
● Tests/maintains emergency electrical equipment such as generators and battery operated lighting; inspects and maintains specialized items; repairs switches and light fixtures; repairs broken pipes, fixes leaks.
● Assists other maintenance and crafts staff performing their duties; responds to emergency call-backs.
● Installs, conducts technical diagnostics and performs specialized repairs on a wide variety of commercial/industrial grade refrigeration and freezer units and compressors, dish machines, disposals, specialized gas ovens, grills, and other electrical equipment.
● Diagnostic testing of coils, valves and connections for leaks, pressure, and performance.
● Flushes refrigerant and recharges refrigeration units, maintains electrical and pneumatic controls, thermostats, heating elements, and plumbing systems.
● Replaces electronic components such as circuit boards, igniters, digital controls, alarms, commercial-grade electrical motors and fixtures.
● Installs and connects piping for gas appliances and oversees and approves contractor work.
● Ensures compliance with applicable laws regarding refrigerant recycling and disposal and maintains required Environmental.
● Protection Agency documentation.
● Purchases and procures parts, tools, and supplies.
● Manages and maintains inventory and determines stock levels.
● Estimates repair costs and recommend replacement of damaged appliances and equipment; coordinates with equipment manufacturers and vendors on equipment warranties.
● The technician will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of all types of commercial ovens, dishwashers, deep-fryers, and other related equipment. Qualified applicants should be skilled in troubleshooting and repair of commercial refrigeration. The technician will maintain kitchen ventilation makeup and exhaust systems.
● General understanding of Electronics, Electrical, Plumbing, and Refrigeration.
● May perform other duties as assigned.
● EPA universal certification for service technicians.
● Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
● Quality control analysis.
● Be competent in reading wiring schematics.
● Be able to work efficiently and independently in a fast-paced environment.
● Have good customer service skills.
● Have basic computer knowledge to operate field software.
● Be willing to work safely in a variety of different situations.
● Be able to lift up to 75 lbs.
● Be able to ascend ladders and access roof equipment.
Experience: Charging, starting, and checking for proper operation of HVAC-type equipment and related devices; troubleshooting and repairing digital electronic and pneumatic HVAC control systems; starting, stopping, and troubleshooting chiller operations and chilled water systems; modifying and/or installing natural gas and water piping; operating, maintaining, diagnosing problems, and repairing industrial type HVAC systems and control devices; performing basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and sheet metal work; welding and repairing material and brazing pipe; cutting, brazing and soldering high-pressure refrigerant piping.
Required Licenses: HVAC Journeyman Licensing, Universal Refrigerant Licensing, AND a Driver's License.
● 2 years of Maintenance Technician experience.
● 1 year of HVAC experience.
● 1-2 years of equipment repair experience.
● 2 years of restaurant and food equipment repair experience.
● Some electrical and gas experience
● Commercial refrigeration skills.
● TIG and MIG welding is a bonus.
● Bunn certified.
● Factory ice machine trained.
● Idaho HVAC Journeyman Card or 2-5 years experience in restaurant commercial appliance and refrigeration repair.
