We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Legal Intern to join our Legal team supporting the Tenaska Power Services business unit. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the legal and regulatory framework governing the energy industry, including renewable energy, power generation, project development, and commercial transactions.

The Legal Intern will assist in researching legal issues, drafting and reviewing documents, and supporting day-to-day legal operations under the supervision of in-house counsel.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Support legal research efforts related to deal structures, regulatory frameworks, and energy market issues under the guidance of attorneys. Summarize findings to assist with identifying potential legal or regulatory concerns.
  • Assist in reviewing standard contracts and transactional documents by preparing summaries, highlighting key terms, and comparing draft versions. Help organize and track edits to documents like ISDAs, EEIs, and NAESBs.
  • Provide administrative and analytical support during the negotiation process of structured long-term agreements and trading documentation by maintaining version control, preparing comparison drafts, and attending internal meetings with supervising attorneys.
  • Monitor developments from trade associations (e.g., FERC, CFTC, PUCT, CPUC) by tracking and summarizing comment letters, rulemaking dockets, and regulatory updates for internal distribution.
  • Research and summarize new or pending regulatory decisions from FERC, ISOs, CFTC, and relevant state commissions to assist attorneys in advising the business on compliance and contract implications.
  • Help develop training materials for internal legal and regulatory compliance programs by organizing content, formatting presentations, and compiling attendance records.
  • Support external counsel coordination by helping track engagement letters, document requests, and deliverables for Canadian and Mexican regulatory matters.
  • Assist attorneys in researching tax or contract dispute issues, including compiling facts, organizing documents, and drafting outlines of relevant legal considerations.
  • Help organize documentation for compliance inquiries or filings related to ISOs, FERC, or state regulatory bodies under attorney supervision.
  • Provide general administrative and research support for legal team matters related to commercial, credit, bankruptcy, or employment law, as needed.

Education/Experience/Skills

Basic Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Juris Doctor (J.D.) program
  • Completion of first-year coursework (1L) by the start of the internship required; preference may be given to 2L or 3L students
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Ability to analyze statutes, regulations, and legal documents, and distill findings into concise summaries
  • Strong attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills
  • Interest in energy markets, regulatory frameworks, or transactional work
  • Familiarity with legal research tools and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Available to work full-time during the summer or part-time during the academic year

Preferred Requirements:

Physical Demands:

Ability to use standard office equipment such as PC, telephone, calculator, printer, copy and fax machines. Must be able to carry a laptop to and from the office. Position may require extended work hours on short notice. All work will be performed in an indoor office environment and may require extended periods of sitting, standing, and bending, as well as typing/data entry.   

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The job will require sitting in an indoor office environment, the need see well enough to read various written materials including, but not limited to paper documents and computer monitors.  The job may also require standing, bending, walking, lifting up to 10 lbs., carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, crouching, driving, and airline travel. The incumbent will have the ability to use standard office equipment such as PC, printer, telephone, calculator, and copy and fax machines.  Travel required to meetings in other office buildings including local and domestic.
