Summary: The Lab Processor provides essential administrative, clerical, and minor clinical support within the laboratory to ensure accurate and timely processing of inpatient and outpatient specimens. This role is critical to maintaining quality testing standards and delivering reliable results for patients and healthcare providers.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Receive and register specimens; verify patient demographics, billing details, diagnoses, and test requests for accuracy, correcting errors as needed.

  2. Serve as a resource to internal and external stakeholders, advocating for patients while delivering exceptional customer service.

  3. Perform clerical duties including data entry, scanning, and recordkeeping for patient documentation.

  4. Ensure timely notification of critical lab values and manage failed fax communications.

  5. Accept specimens from all sources, verifying labeling and compliance with policy; notify appropriate parties of discrepancies.

  6. Prepare specimens through centrifugation, aliquoting, volume measurement, and proper storage for in-house or referral testing.

  7. Follow established procedures for specimen handling and packaging for third-party laboratories.

  8. Demonstrate consistent accuracy and attention to detail, promoting high standards across the team.

  9. Communicate clearly and appropriately with staff and stakeholders, using sound judgment and professional tone.

  10. Work independently with minimal supervision, following instructions and making decisions when leadership is unavailable.

  11. Apply technical competencies and customer service skills effectively in daily lab operations.

  12. Adhere to all safety protocols, proactively identifying and addressing risks, and participating in process improvement initiatives.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Formal training as a medical assistant and/or in medical coding preferred

Experience:

  • Experience in a laboratory or medical office setting preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Manual dexterity and strong communication skills

  • Ability to complete on-the-job training within the probationary period

  • Understanding of safety standards and commitment to quality improvement
