JOB TITLE:  DEPARTMENT CHAIR – HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES             DEPARTMENT:  ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

SALARY RANGE: FACULTY SALARY CLASSIFICATION CHART                            FLSA: EXEMPT

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  Dean of Arts, Sciences, and Business

SCHEDULE DETAILS:  Full-time/11 month position/PSRS

 

This position is responsible for six credit hours of instruction per fall and spring semester. The Department Chair is allowed to teach two classes for overload per semester. Over two classes for overload is rare and requires approval of Dean and Provost.

 

Position Summary

The Department Chair supports the Dean with the overall functions of the Division.  The Chair provides leadership, support, motivation, and accountability in daily operations while also fulfilling the responsibilities of a full-time instructor.

 

Essential Job Duties

  • Provide leadership and facilitate continuous improvement of instruction for the department through collaboration, promotion, support of innovative teaching and classroom creativity, performance management and accountability. 
  • Provide performance management and accountability monitoring of departmental faculty.
  • Promote classes and degrees, facilitate student recruitment, and serve as departmental advocate.
  • Assist the Dean with the screening and hiring of full-time and adjunct faculty.
  • Recruit, interview and hire adjunct faculty for relevant department(s) accordingly.   
  • Lead the department efforts in assessment of student learning and integrated planning.
  • Coordinate faculty decision making with regard to curriculum development.
  • Coordinate department reports and records (e.g. course syllabi, program reviews, student metrics, and inventory).
  • Address student concerns regarding advisement, placement, course difficulties, and instructor conflicts (including Title IX issues). Assist with this duty as needed at other campuses and centers.
  • Develop the course schedule and assignment of instructors for assigned department(s) with the dean’s approval. 
  • Monitor performance and complete evaluations for assigned faculty (e.g., full-time, adjunct and dual-credit).
  • Facilitate the textbook adoption process with faculty.
  • Provide input in the preparation of program budget and manage department budget in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Serve as department liaison to college committees and special project teams.
  • Provide leadership to departmental faculty by hosting a minimum of three departmental meetings per semester and responding to emails within 48 hours.
  • Collaborate with OTC Online and other campuses and centers to schedule, staff, and evaluate classes and faculty.
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Comply with college policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including attending college functions, serving on committees and attending community events.

 

Non-Essential Job Duties

  • Provide input to Dean in evaluation of courses for transfer and articulation discussions with other institutions.
  • Review relevant professional development activities for faculty.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Master’s degree in a department-related discipline from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Three years of teaching experience in department-related discipline.
  • Three years of experience in leadership roles within a community college and professional organization.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge in course content and effectiveness in teaching assigned subjects.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience with an online Learning Management System (such as Canvas/Blackboard).
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as Microsoft Office Suite).

 

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Five years of full-time teaching experience, or equivalent, in department-related discipline.
  • Evidence of community involvement.
  • Experience with Colleague.
  • Experience working within a collegiate setting.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions.  Requires extended periods of time viewing computer monitor or standing; may require adjustment of schedule to include some evening and/or weekends; may encounter occasional exposure to inclement weather during travel. 

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
