Responsibilities & Requirements

The Specialty Pharmacist position coordinates all aspects of patients' pharmaceutical needs and provides safe, efficient, patient-centered, evidence-based medication services.  This pharmacist position is the designated alternate leader that is responsible for overall Specialty Pharmacy operations and services. In the absence of the leader, the alternate leader is responsible for:

  • Maintaining ongoing liaison among the governing body and personnel
  • employing qualified personnel and ensuring adequate personnel education and evaluations
  • ensuring the accuracy of public information materials and activities
  • implementing an effective budgeting and accounting system

Additional duties include but are not limited to: assurance of appropriate dose, route, frequency and duration of therapy; patient medication profile review for appropriateness; checks/verifies oral chemotherapy orders. Must demonstrate critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision. This position also supervises pharmacy technicians and provides answers to drug information questions for patients, families, and other health care practitioners.

Responsible for all necessary record keeping, maintaining of appropriate business records, supervising of all staff, maintaining all policies and procedures, inventory control, and accurate prescription filling.

Dispenses medication pursuant to a physician's order according to the laws and regulations as defined by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy and institutional policies. Enters or reviews entry of medication orders into the pharmacy computer system and ensures accuracy of dispensing. Complies with OBRA 90, HIPAA requirements and accreditation standards applicable to specialty pharmacy.

  • Directs pharmacy workers engaged in mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
  • Ensures all pharmacy operations are in compliance with national accreditation standards.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance and security of controlled substances.
  • Maintains professional interactions with patients to facilitate successful patient experiences
  • Maintains professional working relationships with all caregivers.
  • Promotes a positive work environment by providing constructive ideas and feedback to improve services and the department.

Education

  • Pharmacy degree (B.S. and/or Pharm.D.) from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy required.

Licenses, Certifications and Registrations

  • Pharmacist 
  • BLS 

Skills

  • Current working knowledge of drug treatment (oncology), interaction, and administration
  • Maintains ongoing liaison among the governing body and personnel
  • Ability to interact professionally with patients, medical staff, and third-party payers
  • Ability to supervise others and ensure adequate education and evaluations

Essential Functions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a post-graduate year 1 residency (PGY1), fellowship or 2 years of relevant post-graduate pharmacy experience required in oncology – Preferred but not required.
  • Experience: 3 years of General Practice in Specialty Pharmacy preferred.

     

  • Experience working within a retail, hospital or provider type setting communicating with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals preferred.

     

  • Experience in oncology pharmacy preferred.
