Job Description

In our Pharmaceutical development department within Product Development Science & Technology (PD S&T) at the Ludwigshafen site, you will be working in a team of talented people and experienced experts toward developing tomorrow's products. In cutting-edge laboratories, you will be setting highest standards in the competitive field.

Moving mountains together – as Post-Doc – Freez-Thaw Studies on Biologics (all genders) (full-time, temporary for 24 months).

Product Development, Science and Technology (PDS&T) drives product development of assets which proved effective in early clinical trials and provides support for on-market products.  Biologics drug substances are typically stored as frozen solutions prior to drug product manufacturing. The thawing and freezing of these solutions, particularly repeated cycles, are known to bear the risk of protein damage. Based on current knowledge of the mechanisms of freeze-thaw instability, you design, conduct and evaluate studies pushing for a deeper understanding of the dynamic mechanism in relevant formulations and publish results in peer-reviewed journals. A substantial arm of the studies will be evaluations on the influence of excipient crystallization on freeze-thaw instability.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and perform systematic studies to dive deeper into the root causes of freeze-thaw instability of proteins
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present work at internal panels and scientific conferences aligned with business objectives
  • Collaborate with international multidisciplinary teams to advance project goals
  • Participate in investigations on the root cause of freeze-thaw instability phenomena of development projects
  • Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientific standards, and safe laboratory practices
  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting
  • Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry or chemistry or related area, preferably with a background in biophysics and crystallography
  • Experience with WAXS/SAXS, thermal analyses and vibrational spectroscopies preferred
  • Work experience in the field of protein aggregation is advantageous
  • Experience with analytical methods to detect protein denaturation and aggregation as well as to detect/characterize particles in solution is advantageous
  • Affinity to work hand-on with complex analytical equipment and solve related technical problems
  • Business fluent in English, German language skills of advantage
  • Record of scientific initiative and creativity in research or development activities
  • Capable of independently designing and executing experiments, statistical evaluation, interpreting data, and identifying appropriate follow-up strategies
