About the Team
The Hardware Engineering team is responsible for building robust, high-volume products that perform reliably in the real world. We work across electrical, mechanical, RF, and manufacturing disciplines to ensure system-level performance, compliance, and manufacturability. Our work requires deep technical expertise, strong collaboration across functions, and the ability to quickly iterate from design to validation to production.
About the Role
OpenAI is seeking an EMC/SI/PI Engineer to ensure system-level reliability across electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), signal integrity (SI), and power integrity (PI). You will own these domains from early architecture through production, partnering closely with design, reliability, test, and manufacturing teams. Your work will directly impact the performance, compliance, and scalability of high-volume products.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 4 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Drive PI for boards and flexes: run loop-inductance and DC resistance simulations; translate results into stackup, placement, and routing rules; optimize passive component selection and placement
Own SI on critical digital and sensor interfaces: model and validate using IBIS/IBIS-AMI and 2.5D/3D extraction; set topology, series terminations, and drive strengths; mitigate crosstalk on sensitive signals
Lead EMI/ESD risk reduction early: review layouts, define ESD test specs, and run simulations to identify and resolve root causes
Support compliance and coexistence: develop workflows for coexistence/desense debugging, collaborate with RF/antenna teams, and support emissions testing through certification
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have shipped high-volume devices as the EMC/SI/PI owner, moving confidently between frequency- and time-domain analysis
Are fluent with SI/PI tools (e.g., Ansys SIwave/HFSS, Cadence Sigrity, Keysight ADS/CST), IBIS/IBIS-AMI, S-parameters, and PDN modeling, and can translate simulations into actionable layout rules
Bring strong lab skills (VNA/TDR, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, LISNs, near-field probing, ESD guns) and enjoy rapid design → measure → iterate cycles
Understand regulatory and immunity standards (FCC Part 15, CISPR 32/35, IEC 61000-4-2) and can apply pragmatic pre-compliance strategies
Collaborate effectively with external manufacturing partners, translating engineering intent into testable production requirements, and are comfortable working across time zones with EE/ME/RF/FW/Compliance/Manufacturing teams
