About the Opportunity:
Interim Researcher | $29,000-$33,000 for a 5-month contract, depending on experience
David Zwirner seeks an Interim Researcher who will assist the gallery’s Research & Exhibitions team of researchers with the preparation of provenance documents and written fact sheets on the artworks the gallery handles; exhibition press releases; and other research and documentation needed for the gallery’s global exhibition program and sales activities. This art historian and writer will be responsible for research, writing, and will potentially provide curatorial and administrative support pertaining to the above. This role reports to the Senior Director and the Director of the Research & Exhibitions Department and will work closely with the overall team. This is a full-time, 5-month contract position, running from approximately September 2025 - January/early February 2026. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
What you’ll do:
- This qualified researcher will have a background in art history and will be a strong writer.
- As assigned, prepare fact sheets/presentations on selected works being offered for sale by the gallery for use by Sales team: research and prepare texts; provenance; exhibition histories; literature references, on works/artists.
- Actively participate in the team’s review and editorial feedback process, reviewing colleague’s research documents and text and implementing the team’s feedback and edits on their own documents.
- As assigned, act as a liaison with the gallery’s online content/marketing teams on selected projects; provide research content for these pages and ensure accuracy and alignment of information and language.
- As assigned, assist with drafting and preparing selected exhibition press releases, working closely with the team and with the communications department.
- As assigned, provide research and curatorial support for selected exhibition projects.
What we would like you to have:
- This qualified researcher will have a background in art history and will be a strong writer.
- The role requires strong editorial skills to help maintain the “voice,” consistency, accuracy, and clarity of the writing and research produced by the department and to support the team as needed. The role also demands flexibility, effective communication and interpersonal skills, a collaborative working style, and an ability to multitask and work efficiently.
- The role works closely with colleagues within the department on supplying research and writing as assigned, and will also occasionally coordinate with other departments at the gallery, including Sales, Communications, Online Content, Registration, Art Fairs, and others. The role moreover may require liaising with artists and/or representatives from estates and foundations the gallery works with.
- Preferred candidates will have a minimum of 2+ years working with a gallery, museum, auction house, academic or publishing field. Gallery and auction house experience preferred.
- A graduate degree in art history, curatorial studies, or related is preferred but not mandatory.
