We are looking for a senior high-voltage Electrical Engineer to join our Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) Engineering team in Fort McMurray. Reporting to the Upgrading and Utilities E&I Engineering Manager, you will support the engineering team on the initiatives related to assets management for high voltage electrical equipment in the power generation and distribution jurisdiction.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field

  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)

  • Minimum seven years of related experience working with high voltage electrical systems (preferably in the oil and gas industry or utilities environment)

  • Strong knowledge of transmission line components, substation equipment, and grid interconnection standards

  • Deep understanding of design codes and standards applicable to electrical systems (e.g. CSA 22.3, AUEC, NETA, CSA-463, CSA-462)

  • Experience with system studies (load flow, short circuit, stability, contingency analysis)

  • Proficiency with industry-standard software (e.g., ETAP, CYME, PSCAD)

  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Key Accountabilities:

  • Perform reliability engineering activities for high voltage transmission systems and assets, focusing on system performance, risk mitigation, and operational excellence

  • Analyze system events, outages, and asset performance data to identify trends, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement

  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the reliability and availability of transmission lines, substations, and associated equipment

  • Conduct and interpret reliability studies, including failure mode analysis, root cause investigations, and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) assessments

  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and asset management teams to optimize preventive and predictive maintenance programs

  • Provide technical support to the maintenance execution team in case of special troubleshooting, maintenance procedures clarification, repair requirements and equipment test results assessment

  • Support the identification and resolution of bad actors in the high voltage system defining and leading mitigation/correction strategies

  • Maintain and update reliability metrics, dashboards, and reporting tools for transmission assets

  • Support compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to system reliability

  • Lead or participate in technical investigations, incident reviews, and corrective action planning following system disturbances or asset failures

Location and other Key Details: 

  • You will work out of Syncrude Mildred Lake in Fort McMurray, Alberta

  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs

  • This position has been identified as safety sensitive

  • This position has been identified as security sensitive. Successful candidates must clear a criminal history check

  • You will be required to perform work using ladders and working on elevated work sites such as scaffolds and towers with the ability to perform in a variety of different environments both indoor and outdoor as well as within confined spaces

  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided
