Job Description:
The Public Information/Education Officer for the Nebraska Public Service Commission will be responsible for providing timely and accurate information to the public. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Public Information/Education Officer will be responsible for maintaining proactive media and public relations, developing communications strategies and messages, and managing communications in a manner that promotes transparency, excellence, innovation and alignment with overall goals to ensure clear communication with constituents and stakeholders of the State of Nebraska.
Salary: $70,000 – 75,000 annually, salary is negotiable commensurate with experience.
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Job Duties:
- Develops, writes, edits, designs and produces press releases, newsletters, website content, brochures, fact sheets, and presentations to create public awareness of the Commission’s activities and events, ensuring information released to the media/public are accurate and consistent with agency objectives.
- Prepares and coordinates issuance of public statements to the media and the general public.
- Manages the Commission’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
- As needed, assists with streaming and photography of Commission meetings and events.
- Coordinates promotional materials for newspapers, radio, television, social media and business and industry to develop appropriate preparation and dissemination procedures and ensure that they are followed.
- Communicates with news and other media; responds to media questions in an appropriate public relations manner.
- Prepares and presents clear, concise, and accurate oral and written reports, statements, and presentations.
- Serves as webmaster for the Commission, overseeing the design and structure, updates news, images, digital branding, and web content.
- Coordinates creation and publication of the Commission’s annual reports.
- Conducts proactive engagement and promotion of Commission functions, events, and activities to improve public awareness of the Commission’s responsibilities and actions.
- Develops and recommends strategies, policies, and procedures to agency management to increase the impact and effectiveness of agency public information functions and activities.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff, elected officials, residents, interest groups, legislators and other governmental officials; communicates technical information including complex rules, regulations, legislation, and laws in a manner that is appropriate for the intended audience.
- Collects, develops, and organizes information for dissemination through a variety of media including radio, television, newspapers, magazines, social media networks, podcasts, email, and Web pages.
- Provides like services for Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) across the State of Nebraska.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or advertising, or related field plus five (5) years of related experience. Related work experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis if approved. Example of writing/portfolio MUST be included with application.
Other: Valid Nebraska driver’s license at time of employment and successful completion of the State of Nebraska defensive driving program required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: media production, communication and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral and visual media; strong understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and pertinent local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations.
Skills of: proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; excellent proofreading skills; strong interpersonal and communications skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to: deal with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism; interact with news and other public media; speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to and understand information and ideas as presented verbally; keep informed of developing communication and social media trends and techniques; and present a positive image of the Commission within the State of Nebraska.
