We are seeking a Subscription Billing Engineer to help design, implement, and optimize our subscription billing infrastructure. This role goes beyond backend billing—it plays a critical part in shaping the subscriber experience. You’ll help ensure that every billing interaction is accurate, timely, and frictionless, contributing directly to subscriber satisfaction and retention. Experience with Zuora is highly preferred, but we welcome candidates with expertise in other enterprise-grade billing platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
• Billing System Design & Development: Build and enhance scalable billing systems to support diverse subscription models. Configure and manage product catalogs, pricing plans, invoice templates, and notifications—ensuring consistency and efficiency across Gannett’s 200+ brands.
• Integration & Architecture: Contribute to system architecture and ensure secure, resilient billing practices that can scale with Gannett’s national footprint.
• Subscriber-Centric Billing Operations: Manage recurring billing, payment processing, dunning, and fraud prevention with a focus on minimizing friction and maximizing subscriber trust.
• Data & Reporting: Analyze billing data to identify trends and optimize processes.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with other functional areas on initiatives that improve acquisition and retention experiences.
• Leadership & Documentation: Lead best practices across a diverse set of stakeholders. Support agile development and deployment strategies across multiple business units.
Required Qualifications:
• 3+ years of experience with subscription billing systems (Zuora, Chargebee, Recurly, etc.).
• Strong understanding of recurring revenue models and billing operations.
• Familiarity with programming languages such as Python and JavaScript.
• Experience with APIs, data modeling, and system integrations.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and relational/NoSQL databases.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Hands-on experience with Zuora Billing and its APIs (ZOQL, REST).
• Zuora Admin or Architect certifications.
• Knowledge of Zuora Revenue and/or experience with revenue recognition standards (ASC 606, GAAP).
• Background in SaaS, media, or B2C digital subscription businesses.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $125,000 and $160,000. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications, and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
