Specifies, selects, and applies protective relaying equipment, determines device settings, and develops protection, control, and automation philosophy.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCompletes relay coordination analyses and determines appropriate settings for substation projects.
Leads the development of company system protection philosophy; design of protection, control, and substation automation schemes, and specify relaying and associated equipment, including automation methodologies and large to complex remedial action schemes.
Performs studies, prepares, and provides reports to executive management, internal and external customers, and acts as an expert witness, in legal proceedings, if required.
Applies technical expertise and knowledge in developing state-of-the-art solutions for large to complex protection problems, including the analysis of power system disturbances.
Provides leadership, training, and direction to fellow staff members, and provides technical design and project review in the absence of manager.
Represents company in regional forums and work groups as a technical subject matter expert on system protection issues.
Ensures quality control and external customer service on assigned projects by providing construction support and coordination with construction forces and proactively seeking and incorporating customer input.
Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes, and regulations applicable to position and company, including NERC/WECC mandates.
Participates in rotational weekly 24/7 on-call duties and responds to system control center calls for all relay related outages or alarms.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Essential Education, Skills, and Environment Education and Work Experience
Engineering degree from an accredited college/university and 8 years industry experience with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. If no PE license, must have 10 years as a practicing engineer.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Demonstrated knowledge of:
- Electric utility system protection principles
- Protection philosophies employed across the company.
Demonstrated skills such as:
- Technical analyses utilizing appropriate computer modeling techniques.
- Time management, organizational, oral, and written communication, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Directing the work of a diverse group of engineers in the absence of the designated manager.
Equipment and Applications
Laptop, Doble power system simulator, Microsoft Office, ASPEN OneLiner and Line Constants Program, ENOSERV Powerbase and RTS, and AutoCAD software.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
General office environment with occasional field work required.
