LOCATION: Multi-County (Fayette, Jefferson, Franklin) / KSU Main Campus / EERC / The Farm

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The 4-H Agent – Outdoor and Experiential Learning will lead and expand youth engagement through hands-on outdoor education across Fayette, Jefferson, and Franklin Counties. This position ensures high-quality programming that develops life skills, leadership, and environmental stewardship. Activities will include archery, camping, fishing, environmental science, shooting sports, and other experiential learning opportunities.
The role will strategically utilize Kentucky State University’s Environmental Education and Research Center (EERC) and farms to deliver impactful, place-based learning experiences. The agent will design and implement programs that strengthen Kentucky State University’s role in developing youth leaders through nature-based education. This includes collaborating with schools, community partners, and statewide 4-H networks to offer diverse programming, engaging volunteers, and ensuring safety and quality in all activities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Plan, organize, and implement outdoor and experiential learning programs across Fayette, Jefferson, and Franklin Counties.
Incorporate activities such as archery, camping, fishing, hiking, environmental science, shooting sports, and leadership development into youth programming.
Utilize the EERC and The Farm as primary sites for camps, field trips, and special events.
Partner with schools, community organizations, and volunteers to deliver programming.
Recruit, train, and support volunteers for outdoor and experiential learning activities.
Coordinate multi-county events, such as day camps, overnight experiences, and environmental education programs.
Maintain program equipment and ensure compliance with safety standards.
Track, evaluate, and report participation and program impact.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Youth Development, Recreation, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
Experience in outdoor education, environmental learning, or youth program delivery.
Certifications in outdoor skills, archery, camping, or related fields preferred.
Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with program development, evaluation, and planning.
- Experience collaborating across departments and with external stakeholders.
- Ability to support a diverse team with professionalism and cultural competence.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and virtual collaboration tools.
- Commitment to youth-centered leadership and Cooperative Extension mission.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibility.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Work is primarily performed in outdoor and educational settings, including EERC, The Farm, and community partner locations.
- Some standing, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Travel is required to attend meetings and support statewide events.
- Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities as needed.
