About the role

As an Engineering Director at Duolingo, you'll have the unique opportunity to shape the future of education by leading world-class product engineering teams in developing innovative solutions. This role combines strategic thinking, technical skill, and people leadership, requiring you to drive technical and product direction, and foster a culture of collaboration and growth.

Retention Area

• Retention Area teams tackle one of the hardest problems for our learners: staying motivated. We address this by improving our core product to be more engaging, rewarding, and fun. Our teams build and evolve features like the Streak, widget, and our signature notifications, along with newer in‑app events (Friends Quest, Daily Quests). As one of the most experiment‑driven groups at Duolingo, we play a key role in driving daily active users.

 

  You will...

• Supervise teams under the Retention Area to help drive strategies and roadmap
• Develop and manage other managers
• Balance new bets and thoughtful iteration on existing features, and engineering excellence work
• Provide guidance on scalable, high-quality system design and technical decisions

 

  You have...

• Experience developing and leading software engineering teams and setting technical direction
• Consistent track record managing managers and mentoring technical leaders
• Extensive experience in rapid-growth, consumer-facing, data-driven companies
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in ambiguous, fast paced, and unstructured settings
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field

We post a multi-level salary range for all of our roles.

This is not inclusive of the rest of our awesome portfolio that includes equity compensation and world-class benefits. Our salary ranges are the same for all US locations. Your recruiter can share more details about the range for a specific level during the hiring process. The actual salary within the range is determined by many factors including but not limited to, skills, experience, education, and internal equity.

Salary Range: $240,000—$432,000 USD
