Hato Hone St John

Office

Full Time

Company Description

Ko wai mātou - About us:

Fast-track your way into a frontline ambulance role.

Are you ready to take on a challenge that’s as rewarding as it is demanding? The EMT Residential Programme is your opportunity to train as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and start a meaningful career in emergency healthcare - no previous healthcare experience is needed.

At Hato Hone St John, we’re all about purpose, people, and manaaki. We’re looking for individuals with a strong drive to help others, who thrive under pressure, and who are ready to commit to a fast-paced learning environment and a long-term clinical pathway.

Job Description

He aha te tūranga - About the role:

You’ll embark on a full-time, paid training program based in Palmerston North for full time work in Dunedin.

Starting early February 2026, over six months, you'll spend ten weeks on-site in Palmerston North (accommodation provided), returning home each weekend.

The program involves daytime learning and evening study – it’s an intensive and structured program, so leave isn’t available during this time. This unique opportunity is designed to set you up for long-term success, building strong foundations and professional networks from day one.

What the programme offers:

  • Full-time, paid training over approximately six months
  • Fast-tracked, high-intensity learning—earn while you learn
  • Hands-on placements alongside experienced Paramedics
  • Industry-recognised NZ Diploma in Ambulance Practice (level 5),
  • Step straight into a full-time EMT position in Dunedin at the end of your training

This is not a course for the faint-hearted. It’s an immersive, challenging programme designed to prepare you for real emergency situations—where you’ll be expected to step up, stay calm, and make a difference when it matters most.

Qualifications

Ko wai koe - About you:

You’ll need to bring:

  • A genuine commitment to a long-term clinical career
  • The ability to learn quickly in a compressed, high-pressure training environment
  • A full NZ driver's licence (held for 12+ months or with an approved advanced driving course)
  • Great physical fitness and emotional resilience
  • Strong communication skills and teamwork
  • A current first aid certificate (we can help you get this if needed)

Previous experience in health or social care is an advantage, but not essential—we’ll provide all the training. What we’re really looking for is passion, dedication, and the mindset to succeed.

Individuals currently enrolled in the National Diploma pathway or enrolled in semester two or beyond of a Paramedicine degree are not eligible for this position.

Why join us?

You’ll be joining a respected, community-driven organisation with a proud history and a bold future. We’ll back you from day one—investing in your learning, wellbeing, and long-term development. You’ll live and train alongside others who share your values, forming connections that last a lifetime.

Your future starts here.
If you’re up for the challenge—and ready to commit to a career that really matters—we’d love to hear from you.
