What this role is all about:
The Manager, Data Engineering is responsible for leading the design, development, and optimization of scalable data platforms that power digital products and enterprise analytics. This role will drive the strategic direction of data engineering within the Digital Solutions team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, secure, and accessible data solutions that support innovation, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strong leadership and collaboration skills to build and guide a high-performing team, while aligning data initiatives with broader digital transformation goals.
This role is open to hybrid/remote working arrangements within British Columbia. While we welcome all applications, we anticipate filling this role with a candidate located in British Columbia.
What you’ll do:
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and coach a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Define team goals, set performance expectations, and conduct regular feedback and development conversations.
Data Pipeline Modernization
- Design and oversee the implementation of scalable, secure, and high-performance data pipeline architectures to support digital products and analytics.
- Stay current with emerging trends in Microsoft’s data ecosystem and proactively introduce innovative tools and practices.
- Drive adoption of modern data architecture principles such as lakehouse, delta lake, and real-time streaming.
- Ensure data models and schemas are optimized for performance, usability, scalability and security across cloud and on-prem environments.
Maintenance and support
- Provide maintenance and support of existing on-prem and cloud pipelines and data integrations.
- Evaluate existing data pipelines and recommend modernization strategies aligned with business goals and cloud best practices.
- Optimize cloud resource usage and performance through monitoring, automation, and continuous improvement.
Digital Solutions Enablement
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver impactful data solutions.
- Translate business needs into technical requirements and data solutions that drive measurable outcomes.
- Enable real-time data processing and analytics to support dynamic digital experiences.
Data Governance & Quality
- Implement and enforce data governance practices, including data lineage, cataloging, and data security.
- Implement monitoring and alerting systems to ensure data quality, reliability, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Technology Strategy & Innovation
- Evaluate and recommend new tools, frameworks, and platforms to enhance the data engineering ecosystem.
- Lead the adoption of modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and containerization.
Project & Stakeholder Management
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure timely and successful delivery of data initiatives.
- Communicate progress, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Balance short-term delivery with long-term strategic planning for data infrastructure and capabilities.
What you'll bring:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 7+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Advanced T-SQL proficiency.
- Proven expertise in Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, Synapse Analytics, and Power BI.
- Strong understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT processes, and cloud data architecture.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and Git-based version control.
- Familiarity with Databricks, Azure Purview, and Azure Monitor is a plus.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
- Certifications in Microsoft Azure (e.g., Azure Data Engineer Associate).
- Experience with data mesh, data observability, and metadata management.
- Knowledge of Python and Spark in a cloud environment.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

- The salary range for this position is $109,600 - $137,000
