Position Summary
The Medical Coding Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the medical coding department to ensure accurate and timely coding of patient medical records. This role involves supervising a team of medical coders, auditors ensuring compliance with coding standards, and collaborating with other healthcare departments to optimize documentation and reimbursement processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and lead a team of medical coders/auditors, including training, provide Manager feedback on performance of staff.
  • Monitoring DNFB accounts: Identifying discharged patients whose records are incomplete or not yet coded, which delays billing.  Helping reduce revenue cycle delays by facilitating timely and accurate coding.   Report data to Management.
  • Overseeing and managing relationships with external vendors and suppliers to ensure the company receives quality products and services. This role involves monitoring vendor performance and collaborating across departments to support business goals and maintain efficient supply chains.
  • Manage vendor onboarding, including due diligence, compliance checks, communication and documentation.
  • Maintain and communicate with Solventum, Cerner and inhouse IT resources.
  • Testing for multiple department updates, new software and installs.  Support implementation of new coding software or technologies and participate in workflow improvement initiatives.
  • Report and trend internal audits and quality assurance/coding reviews to Management review.
  • Prepare reports on coding performance metrics and compliance for management review.
  • Address and resolve coding discrepancies and denials related to coding errors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent certification required upon hire or transfer.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of medical coding experience, preferably in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS coding systems, CDI workflow knowledge and healthcare reimbursement methodologies.
  • Previous experience with McKesson Star, Cerner/Power chart and Solventum/3m360 Encompass.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Lean Methodology preferred.
  • Ability to interpret complex medical documentation and translate it into appropriate codes.
  • Computer literacy; experience with Microsoft Teams and Applications.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and compliance.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Demonstrates the competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, hazardous substances, and potential injury.  This position requires sitting, standing, walking, stooping and crouching a majority of the workday.  Works with such equipment as computer terminal, fax machine, printer and copier.

This position report to department leadership.
