Job Summary 

The Lab Technician performs routine and specialized laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, and other specimens to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. Under appropriate supervision, this role supports accurate and timely test processing through specimen preparation, test execution, equipment maintenance, and quality control. The Lab Technician follows established protocols and regulatory requirements and may assist with training, chain-of-custody collections, and interdepartmental support to ensure consistent and reliable laboratory operations. 

Essential Functions

  • Performs moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing accurately and efficiently according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Verifies and documents test results; reports findings in a timely manner using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Conducts required quality control procedures; analyzes control data and takes corrective actions for out-of-range results as needed.
  • Performs routine instrument maintenance and function checks; troubleshoots malfunctions and communicates issues to supervisors or vendors.
  • Participates in proficiency testing and ensures compliance with regulatory standards for assigned tests.
  • Assists in the orientation and training of new laboratory personnel and students on test procedures, quality practices, and safety protocols.
  • Supports specimen collection processes, including chain-of-custody urine drug screens and breath alcohol testing when applicable.
  • Adheres to all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and follows the laboratory safety and infection prevention plans.
  • Assists across laboratory sections and with phlebotomy or support duties as needed to maintain workflow and turnaround times.
  • Maintains documentation, records, and statistical data in compliance with department and accreditation requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or related field required or
  • Completion of a formal military Medical Laboratory Specialist training program (minimum 50 weeks) and Medical Laboratory Specialist designation required
  • 0-2 years of clinical laboratory experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of laboratory testing principles, instrumentation, and procedures.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions, prioritize tasks, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficient in using laboratory information systems and standard office software.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, infection control, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining orderly and accurate records.

Licenses and Certifications

  • MLT - Medical Technician - ASCP required or
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)-AMT required
