Lead Engineer - Power & Distribution (P&D) - Glasgow, Scotland

Duties:

The Lead Engineer provides day-to-day support and leadership within the Power & Distribution (P&D) Engineering team, leading the design, integration, and interface management activities on rail and non-rail projects, including high voltage AC or DC traction power distribution and associated protection, EMC, low voltage, SCADA and telecoms. This role covers design through to delivery, ensuring works meet the required performance, safety, and reliability standards.

The role supports the wider Engineering and Project Management functions in client engagement, subcontractor management, budget and resource allocation, ITT bidding, and the mentorship of other engineers to develop the P&D team.

Main Duties

  • Support the Engineering Manager in the leadership and development of the P&D engineering team.
  • Provide support to the various project teams offering technical guidance and best practice with particular emphasis on quality, design and project development.
  • Support the development of the engineering capability for all engineers in the P&D team, providing Continuous Professional Development, mentorship and guidance to CRE and CEM candidates and professional accreditation.
  • Where required, discharge the duties of Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) and Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) in accordance with NR/L2/RSE/02009.
  • Lead on innovation, technology and digitalisation across both the lead discipline and the wider SPL business.
  • Provide out of hours/emergency support on projects as required.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including clients, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
  • Provide support to the Engineering Management team to develop new and existing work streams and sectors.
  • Support new tendering/bidding opportunities for workstreams/frameworks, assisting in the preparation of PQQ and ITT responses as required.
  • Support the Project Management Team with any technical evaluation for change control and delay events against the contract requirements.
  • Lead the review of contracted scope documentation and preparation of scope documents for subcontractors.
  • Provide engineering oversight of all aspects of the design, integration, delivery and commissioning of projects, managing the interfaces between systems and subsystems, ensuring projects meet the required performance, safety, value and reliability standards.
  • Supporting the Engineering function and site-based Construction Management teams in the technical aspects of project delivery, monitoring site work activities throughout the construction, commissioning and EIS stages.
  • Develop strategies associated with the delivery of project works including assessment of cost, risk and hazards including developing efficiencies where practicable, providing confidence in the company’s ability to plan and execute works to the highest standards.
  • Support the technical reviews of internal and external (sub-contracted) documentation including designs, work package plans, and testing/commissioning schedules to ensure these are integrated and buildable, with a focus on quality and safety.
  • Support and assure the management of red-line diagrams, closure of any snags/defects, and production of as built drawings so there is a seamless handover of each site to the client.
  • Lead engineering meetings and workshops with clients and subcontractors, ensuring meeting minutes and action logs are developed as appropriate.
  • Lead the quality assurance of projects by supporting the supervisory and engineering teams in the development and management of Quality Plans and Construction Assurance Plans.
  • Undertake periodic site audits and safety inspections when SPL Powerlines UK Limited staff are engaged on site duties.

The person:

  • Previous role as a Project Engineer, preferably in Rail Power & Distribution or the Utility Industry, where signed off as CEM/CRE or DPE within Systems type projects with under NR/L2/RSE/02009 or equivalent.
  • Engineering qualification at BSc/BEng, preferably in electrical (power) engineering.
  • Member of relevant Professional institution and working towards IEng/CEng.
  • Able to recognise the importance of following procedures associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Willingness to learn and open minded for new technologies.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and support as required.
  • An organised and methodical approach to tasks, and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including an ability to problem solve.
  • The ability to stay calm and meet deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to different locations as and when required.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects balancing and managing own time.
  • Ability to work independently and lead works with minimal supervision.
