Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking Deputy Director of the Division of Commodity Services. The division provides statewide coordinated management and administrative oversight of official, uniform, and unbiased commodity grading, evaluation, analysis, inspection, certification, and audit programs based on established standards designed to identify quality and value. The offices within the division currently include Fruit & Vegetable Services, Grain Services, Livestock Services, Peanut Services, and Poultry & Egg Services. The selected candidate will be responsible for providing overall managerial, administrative, and technical assistance to the Director. The position assists the Director in ensuring the division achieves established goals and objectives, as well as developing long and short-range plans to ensure quality services are available to industry. Duties include oversight of staff and management functions such as budget, contracts, staff training and licensure needs. Day and overnight travel is required for this position, as program areas cover locations throughout Virginia. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable management skills that including planning, human resources, finance, staff supervision, and public relations in an economic, marketing, or regulatory environment along with effective methods and techniques of complaint and/or legal investigation. Strong written and oral communication skills along with the ability to work harmoniously with a variety of individuals. Computer proficiency. The demonstrated ability to plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and manage complex programs; to interpret standards and regulations; supervise a staff comprised of subordinate levels of supervisors and support staff; make procedural and policy decisions; analyze and interpret data; develop and maintain budgets to include fee-based budgets; analyze current and future industry trends, and adapt current practices to meet and anticipate industry change. Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid driver's license and have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. Once in position, a valid Virginia's driver's license is required. HS Diploma/GED required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include advanced knowledge of Business Administration, Agricultural, Economics, or a related field. Considerable and progressive experience with administrative, budget and managerial responsibilities that include proven financial and human resource management skills.
