The Opportunity
The School of Computer Science and Engineering is seeking a Software Engineer for a key role supporting a high-impact project. In this position, you will be responsible for coordinating and implementing project ideas to develop and demonstrate tangible outcomes to stakeholders. The role involves developing working prototypes, communicating practical results, providing analytical and reporting support, and assisting with administrative tasks related to key project deliverables. You will engage in software development using deep learning, natural language processing, and large language models (LLMs). This position is embedded within a commercialization initiative focused on delivering a proof-of-concept software solution.
This role reports to Prof Flora Salim and has no direct reports.
- Salary, Level 7.1: $113,926 per annum + 17% superannuation
- Full time or Part time – 1.0 FTE or 0.5 FTE
- Fixed term – 4 months with ASAP start
- Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Skills and Experience
- An undergraduate degree in computing, coupled with 2+ years of software development experience.
- Good fundamentals in Transformer-based natural language processing demonstrated through academic courses or projects.
- Experience with deep learning methods and sequence-to-sequence models, such as Transfomers
- Experience coding in Python, including deep learning libraries such as Transformers, Pytorch; statistical analysis, and time-series analysis packages.
- Experience using AWS Services for Software Deployment, and GitHub/GitLab for Version Control.
- Experience with LLM integration frameworks such as LlamaIndex and LangChain.
- Experience with web application-based deployment using libraries such as streamlit.
- Familiarity with spatiotemporal data handling, temporal embeddings, and chunking techniques for multi-horizon forecasting tasks, particularly with real datasets from realworld scenarios.
- Stakeholder management skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
