Description
The Teen Youth Development Professional has a teen-focused specialty and is responsible for delivering high-quality programs and mentorship to members in grades 9 through 12. This role focuses on creating meaningful relationships with teen members, supporting their academic success, workforce readiness, leadership development, and overall well-being. The position involves planning, implementing, and evaluating teen-centered programs in areas such as college and career exploration, social-emotional learning, civic engagement, and creative enrichment.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate programs for high school-aged youth in alignment with BGCMLA’s strategic teen initiatives.
- Promote and maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages teens to build confidence, leadership skills, and positive peer relationships.
- Foster strong relationships with teen members, acting as a mentor and positive role model.
- Track attendance, participation, and engagement to evaluate program impact and report outcomes.
- Actively promote programs and recruit teen members through outreach within the clubhouse and the broader community, including high schools and community partners.
- Lead and support signature teen programs such as Social Recreation, Youth of the Year, and Keystone.
- Collaborate with school sites, families, and local partners to ensure a holistic approach to teen development and identify referral opportunities for additional services.
- Maintain accurate program records, incident reports, and documentation related to member progress.
- Create a welcoming and youth-led program culture by regularly involving teens in planning, decision-making, and feedback opportunities.
- Maintain program spaces, ensuring they are organized, safe, and teen-friendly.
- Support volunteer engagement and mentor assignments to enhance program delivery.
- Participate in required staff meetings, training, and professional development.
- Assist with special events, trips, and club-wide teen activities as needed.
- Provide guidance and behavior management in accordance with BGCMLA policies and expectations.
- Support other team members and programming efforts as needed, including driving club vehicles or participating in outreach events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION
- High School diploma or GED, minimum of two years of college experience preferred.
- Combined experience and/or formal training equivalent to a minimum of two years where: there is experience working with youth and knowledge of youth development and/or formal training, and/or experience teaching youth while creating engaging learning experiences.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Hold a valid drivers’ license and pass motor vehicle driving record check.
- Pass criminal background check.
- Pass (negative result) a TB test.
- CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred.
- Prior experience working in a Boys & Girls Club preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY and SKILLS
- Knowledge of core subject areas relevant to teen programming, including academic support, college and career readiness, workforce development, social-emotional learning, and youth leadership.
- Understanding of adolescent development and best practices in youth engagement for high school-aged members.
- Skilled in designing and delivering creative, teen-focused programs that are engaging, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to plan, lead, and evaluate programs that lead to measurable positive outcomes for teens.
- Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and mentor diverse youth populations, including experience managing behavior and fostering a supportive club environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with teens, families, staff, and community partners.
- Ability to model professionalism, reliability, and a growth mindset in all interactions and maintain clear boundaries with teen members.
WORKING CONDITIONS and DRIVING
- Travel between Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles sites and schools and various field trip sites as well as in the community is required. Must meet the insurance standards of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles.
- This position may be assigned to any sites within the Club as needed to accommodate changes in programming, staffing, or operational requirements.
- Hours are based on school calendar and attendance patterns/trends – evening hours are required during the school year; hours will vary during summer and school breaks; occasional weekend hours are required
