Description
Works with the client in examining the alternatives regarding the client’s situation as a means of problem-solving. Educates clients and/or advocates for them regarding the availability and pursuit of needed resources when appropriate.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
- Provides assessment, crisis intervention, individual, family and group counseling.
- Provides classroom workshops in life skills and school readiness success.
- Coordinates clinical and case management services with school staff, parents and other partners providing care to client.
- Participates in the discharge plan once the client has been released from the hospital, drug treatment center, shelter, juvenile detention center, etc.
- Manages all agency expectations for case recording, statistical, and other documentation on a timely basis and according to the policies of the Agency.
- Develops professional partnerships and represent the agency with professionalism and integrity.
- Develops professional partnerships and represent the agency with professionalism and integrity.
- Writes an assessment that clearly communicates understanding of the situation, including such factors as client’s strengths/weaknesses, client’s needs and aspirations, and awareness of environmental resources, opportunities and expectations.
- Refers client for psychiatric, psychological, or other services, when appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB:
Education:
- Master’s Degree in social work or counseling, or related field
- LSW required, LCSW preferred
Experience:
- At least 3 years post Master’s Degree experience working with children and adolescents.
- Sensitivity to cultural diversity is required. Ability to communicate and cooperate with diverse families, various professionals and community groups.
- Demonstrates ability in providing comprehensive counseling services, including like skills training and crisis intervention.
- Displays of strong knowledge base in case conceptualization, diagnosis and treatment.
- Understands systems and incorporate this knowledge into work. This includes both family systems and the multiple systems impacting a student’s life.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates ability to manage multiple responsibilities, maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
- Knowledge of Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
- Knowledge of public/community resources that are helpful to clients and their families
- Knowledge of committee functioning with the ability to serve on agency and interagency committees
- Knowledge of models of assessment and diagnosis of individuals/families, including
- Knowledge of family systems and dynamics and stages of family life (adopted, blended, single and foster family dynamics)
- Knowledge of individual and families from varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Demonstrates empathy with the client but seek to be objective in the interest of the client
- Understands and deals with ambivalence on the part of the client, such as when the client wants help but is unable to ask for it or does not use it.
- Demonstrates an ability to deal with client’s anxiety or discomfort which may be manifested by nervousness, rudeness, impatience, irritability, indignation, anger, fear, tears, etc.
- Recognizes the importance of the termination process by discussing it with clients.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to remain stationary 50% of the time.
- Must be able to frequently move inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Must be able to transport oneself to and from work sites.
- Occasionally ascends/descends stairs.
- Constantly moves to assist during program activities.
- Frequently moves desks, chairs, tables and easels.
- At times may be required to lift up to 25 lbs. for various classrooms and events needs.
- Frequently moves in outdoor weather conditions.
