R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited is currently hiring two Intermediate Construction Inspectors to join our dynamic Field Services team. This is an exciting opportunity for seasoned professionals with a strong background in watermain and sewer construction inspection who are committed to delivering quality infrastructure with safety, precision, and community care at the forefront.

We’re looking for individuals with at least 7 years of hands-on inspection experience in linear water and wastewater projects. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of trenching safety, traffic control, watermain and sewer installation, and road restoration. Experience with trenchless technologies is considered a valuable asset.

This role is primarily field-based, offering flexibility to work out of our Hamilton or Mississauga offices depending on project requirements and personal preference.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an Intermediate Construction Inspector, you’ll be responsible for overseeing the construction of linear water and wastewater infrastructure projects. You’ll ensure compliance with contract documents, safety standards, and environmental regulations while maintaining clear communication with clients, contractors, and stakeholders. Your work will directly contribute to the successful delivery of essential municipal infrastructure.

What Success Looks Like in This Role

  • Conduct thorough on-site inspections of watermain and sewer construction projects.
  • Ensure contractor adherence to safety plans, traffic control, and environmental protocols.
  • Maintain meticulous project records, including daily reports, as-built documentation, and progress tracking.
  • Liaise effectively with clients, contractors, municipal authorities, and the public.
  • Support contract administration, including payment verification, change order review, and meeting documentation.
  • Mentor junior inspection staff and contribute to team development.
  • Demonstrate empathy and professionalism when addressing community concerns related to construction impacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily site inspections to verify conformance with drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare and issue detailed inspection reports and project documentation.
  • Monitor contractor schedules and track progress against baseline plans.
  • Coordinate with specialist inspection agencies (e.g., geotechnical, disinfection, CCTV).
  • Review contractor invoices and assist with payment certification.
  • Attend construction meetings and prepare minutes.
  • Assist with tender and contract document preparation.
  • Provide constructability feedback during design phases.
  • Support evening/weekend inspections as required by project schedules.

What You Bring

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or education in a related discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in sewer and watermain construction inspection.
  • Strong understanding of trenching safety, traffic control, and restoration practices.
  • Familiarity with trenchless technologies is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Ability to interpret contract documents and engineering drawings.
  • Solid knowledge of construction materials, methods, and scheduling.
  • Understanding of OHSA and construction regulations.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and record-keeping skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle.
