Position Overview
The Manager of Product Engineering Operations is a dynamic leadership role responsible for optimizing and overseeing the end-to-end operational functions within the product engineering organization. This senior-level position acts as the connective tissue between engineering, product management, quality assurance, and other cross-functional teams, aiming to deliver best-in-class products on time and within budget. With a blend of analytical acumen and strategic foresight, the Senior Manager is charged with enhancing operational efficiency, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and enabling teams to deliver innovative products that drive business growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Lead and manage the operational strategy and execution for the product engineering group, ensuring alignment with overall business and technology goals.
- Process Optimization: Identify, implement, and refine processes that streamline product development, reduce inefficiencies, and improve quality of deliverables.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as a primary liaison between engineering, product, QA, design, support, and other business functions to ensure seamless coordination and communication.
- Resource Planning & Allocation: Develop and implement strategies for effective workforce planning, talent allocation, and workload balancing across multiple teams and projects.
- Performance Measurement: Define and track key operational metrics (KPIs) to monitor the health and performance of the engineering organization; generate regular management reports and insights for senior leadership.
- Program & Project Management: Oversee the execution of complex, cross-functional engineering projects, ensuring that goals, timelines, and budgets are met while managing risks and dependencies.
- Continuous Improvement: Champion a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging data-driven insights, post-mortem analyses, and retrospectives to drive process and product enhancements.
- Risk Management: Proactively identify and mitigate operational risks related to delivery, quality, scalability, and compliance.
- Change Management: Lead change initiatives that drive operational excellence, including adoption of new methodologies (e.g., Agile, DevOps), processes, and organizational structures.
- Budget & Financial Oversight: Develop, monitor, and manage budgets for product engineering operations, ensuring effective use of resources and alignment with business priorities.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate regularly with executive leadership, product owners, and external partners to provide visibility into engineering operations and strategic initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 7+ years of experience in engineering operations, program management, or related roles within a technology-driven environment.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing cross-functional teams and large-scale projects.
- Proven track record in process optimization, change management, and implementation of best practices within product engineering organizations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions and recommendations.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
- Deep understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), Agile, and/or DevOps methodologies.
- Experience with engineering tools and platforms (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Git, CI/CD).
- Financial acumen and experience managing operational budgets.
- High degree of organizational savvy, adaptability, and emotional intelligence.
