Description

Senior Director Board Governance & Communications

Ensures that the Board of Directors, Board Committees, Regional Community Councils, and affiliated groups operate with transparency, accountability, and excellence. As a strategic liaison between executive leadership and the Board, this role manages board giving, governance operations, promotes best practices, and fosters meaningful engagement to position the Board as a powerful organizational asset. Additionally, supports leadership development pipelines such as the Young Leaders Society and stewards’ philanthropic initiatives through the Honorary Board and planned giving efforts.

The Board Governance Director ensures that Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston remains legally compliant, strategically effective, and deeply connected to its mission. By strengthening board infrastructure and engagement, this role safeguards the organization’s integrity and future success—enhancing its capacity to serve thousands of youth across Greater Houston with excellence and impact.

 

Core Responsibilities

Revenue Generation (50%)

Strategic Philanthropy & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Grow a $1 million plus portfolio in board giving (annual campaign, special event & corporate giving, new prospects)
  • Collaborate with the VP of Development to monitor board giving and identify fundraising opportunities.
  • Support board involvement in campaigns, events, and community initiatives.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Honorary Board and support growth of the Planned Giving Society.

Regional & Emerging Leadership Support

  • Provide governance and fundraising guidance to Regional Community Councils (Fort Bend, Galveston, Wharton).
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Young Leaders Society, fostering leadership development and deeper engagement.

 

Board Governance (25%)

Board & Committee Operations

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, standing committees, and task forces.
  • Manage meeting logistics, scheduling, agenda development, and documentation.
  • Maintain an annual calendar of board activities, retreats, and special sessions.
  • Prepare and distribute presentations, financial reports, dashboards, and meeting materials.

Governance Policy & Compliance

  • Maintain and update governance documents including bylaws, committee charters, and disclosures.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and organizational policies.
  • Track governance metrics such as attendance, term limits, committee participation, and board giving.

Board Development & Engagement

  • Work with Leadership Team - Board Governance & Nominations Committee to recruit and onboard new board members.
  • Lead orientation and ongoing education to ensure clarity of roles and mission alignment.
  • Facilitate annual board self-assessments and implement strategies for continuous improvement.

Organizational Alignment & Insight

  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to align board initiatives with strategic priorities.
  • Stay current on governance trends and recommend innovations to strengthen board effectiveness.
  • Support governance-related requests for audits, grants, and media inquiries.

 

Strategic Communications (25%)

  • Lead high-level marketing and communications strategy aligned with organizational goals.
  • Manage public relations and advertising efforts; draft press releases and media content.
  • Track performance across communication channels and analyze impact.
  • Coordinate messaging across departments to ensure consistency and clarity.
  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets and manage inquiries across platforms.

 

Qualifications

 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (JD, MPA, MBA) or certification preferred
  • Minimum 7 years in nonprofit leadership, board engagement, fundraising and strategic communications
  • Proven success in board development, compliance, and stakeholder relations
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills
  • Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, board platforms (BoardEffect, OnBoard, Diligent), CMS, social media
  • Ability to align governance and communications with organizational goals
  • Discretion, professionalism, and collaborative spirit
