Position Summary
Operation Smile Tanzania is seeking a dynamic and experienced Education Coordinator to lead and coordinate the implementation of medical education and health workforce capacity-building initiatives. This role is pivotal in strengthening the cleft care and surgical services ecosystem in Tanzania by supporting the development of cleft-competent, multidisciplinary healthcare teams and fostering partnerships with academic institutions, hospitals, and government bodies.
The Education Coordinator will work closely with the Country Manager, Regional Medical and Education teams, and Global Medical Education (GME) and Volunteer Management departments to ensure the successful planning, execution, and evaluation of educational programs. This includes short-term training, fellowships, visiting professorships, and long-term academic collaborations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Program Implementation & Coordination
- Lead the planning, execution, and follow-up of all in-country and regional education programs, including:
- Short-term training for surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, speech therapists, nutritionists, psychosocial providers, and biomedical engineers.
- Visiting Professorships and academic exchanges in collaboration with Tanzanian universities and hospitals.
- Fellowships and externships for Tanzanian healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate logistics for educational programs including travel, accommodation, licensing, and materials.
- Serve as the primary liaison between Operation Smile Tanzania and local academic institutions, the Ministry of Health, and professional associations (e.g., COSECSA, CANECSA).
- Support the development and localization of curricula and training materials in collaboration with GME teams.
2. Volunteer Management
- Identify, recruit, and credential local medical volunteers in collaboration with the Global Volunteer Management team.
- Maintain accurate records in the Global Volunteer Management System.
- Support volunteer placement in local and international programs and develop volunteer engagement strategies.
3. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting
- Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks for all educational activities.
- Collect and analyze data to assess program outcomes and impact.
- Prepare timely reports for internal and external stakeholders, including donors and partners.
- Ensure continuous quality improvement of educational offerings.
4. Quality Assurance & Clinical Support
- Collaborate with the Medical Quality team to uphold clinical standards in partner hospitals.
- Organize joint supportive supervision visits and hospital assessments.
- Provide training on Operation Smile’s global clinical standards and guidelines.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, Education, Public Health, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in program coordination, preferably in medical education or health systems strengthening.
- Experience working with academic institutions, government health departments, and international NGOs.
- Familiarity with cleft care or surgical systems is an advantage.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and digital collaboration tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multicultural environments.
- Fluency in English and Swahili (preferred).
