We are looking for a Senior Counsel to join the GE Vernova Labor & Employment team. This position will cover labor and employment issues in both Canada and the USA. The location is flexible, and the role can be based in or near any principal GE Vernova office either in Canada or the USA. The role reports direct to Executive Counsel, L & E in the USA.
The Senior Counsel will be expected to work as part of a global Center of Excellence (COE), providing support as required to all of the GE Vernova businesses in Canada and the USA and contributing to projects across the North America region or globally, as assigned.
Position Description (Essential Functions):
The Senior Counsel will have the following responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice and support on Labor and Employment law issues to GE Vernova businesses in Canada and the USA. The Senior Counsel will provide legal and compliance advice across a wide range of issues, including, for example, employee and union relations; restructuring, redundancies and outsourcing; equal opportunities and diversity; employment litigation; mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and outsourcings; collective bargaining obligations; employee discipline, grievances and termination; drafting of employment separation agreements; working time obligations.
- Retain and work effectively with outside counsel where required, and manage external counsel to reduce costs, secure value-added services and improve ‘make vs buy’ decisions.
- Work as part of the L&E team to drive simplification initiatives and consistent enterprise standards for Labor and Employment support across North America and globally.
- Provide training for the HR and business teams on key employment and compliance risk areas.
- Keep abreast of relevant legal developments across the North America region.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Qualified lawyer – licensed to practice in Canada or the USA.
- Substantial labor and employment post-qualification experience within both Canada and the USA, preferably including time spent both with a leading law firm and in-house with a large multinational corporation.
- Demonstrable fluency in English, including ability to draft and negotiate, and present legal and business documents, in English.
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS
- Extensive “hands-on” labor & employment legal experience, including international experience;
- Intermediate fluency in French.
- Substantial experience and success in working with senior management and international environments;
- Experience of labor and employment work on each of M&A activity, litigation, advisory work and training;
- Superior advocacy skills, including the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate in writing and orally, an aptitude for practical negotiation, the capability to think clearly and quickly under pressure, and the composure to satisfy multiple and often competing interests.
- A strong commitment to integrity and professionalism, and passion for excellence.
- A work history that affirmatively demonstrates leadership, and ability to persuade and push others to deliver on commitments.
- Superior negotiating skills and ability to work in complex international environment, substantial experience working in different cultures and an open and tolerant mind with respect to diversity.
- Demonstrable computer literacy with specific ability to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other software such as redlining tools.
- Strong project management and prioritization skills
- Record of dedicated and successful teamwork, excellent interpersonal and diplomatic abilities.
If contracted in the US:
The base pay range for this position is $176,000 - 250,000 USD Annual. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for a performance bonus. This posting is expected to close on 8/24/2025.
*The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas.
