Purpose/Description

Hearing and Vision Technicians 1 provide preschool and school-age hearing and vision screening in Michigan according to the Public Health Code; Act 368 of 1978; Part 93. Hearing and Vision Technicians are employed by local health departments (LHDs) and comprehensively trained by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to provide screenings in the LHD service area. Under limited supervision, this position performs preliminary and re-test hearing and vision screening at various schools throughout Out-Wayne County to detect hearing or vision abnormalities in children; interprets and records test results and performs any necessary follow-up by letter, phone, or conference; travels to various schools throughout Out-Wayne County and utilizes current county-wide and department-specific software to complete assignments.

  • Required Tasks
  • Provide preliminary hearing screening to children and adolescents
  • Provide vision screening to children and adolescents
  • Document results of screening correctly and in a timely manner
  • Enter data into pre-approved forms and databases. Assist with generating monthly reports
  • Correctly complete and submit necessary forms for each program, times sheets, and activity sheets in a timely manner
  • Schedule screening sessions in the community
  • Make follow-up telephone calls regarding screening sessions, results, and referrals
  • Develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of people to assure efficient screenings
  • Educational Requirements
  • Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year of paid or volunteer experience working with children in a medical setting (Doctor's office, clinic or hospital) or nine (9) months of paid or volunteer experience working in an education setting (Daycare, after-school program, preschool, elementary/secondary school, school lunchroom and school library)
  • A valid state of Michigan driver's license with safe and acceptable driving record
  • An automobile available for transportation during work hours on a reimbursed mileage basis
  • Attend the two-week hearing threshold and the one-week vision training courses provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and obtain the hearing threshold and vision certification within two years of hire, if trainings are offered by MDHHS or as soon thereafter
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with children, parents, and school staff in a friendly and supportive manner
