As Director, Agile Product Manager (APM) in Global Specialty, you’ll help shape the future of our Value Streams by translating vision into outcomes and outcomes into impact.
You’ll lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with business leaders, architects, and technologists to prioritize investments, evolve strategies, and deliver capabilities that matter. This role is both visionary and hands-on—requiring an agile product mindset, strong business sense, data fluency, and a passion for customer-centric innovation.
This role manages a team of Agile Product Owners (APOs).
WORK ARRANGEMENTS:
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work schedule. Candidates who live near one of our office locations have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
How You’ll Deliver Value
Agile Product Strategy & Execution
- Autonomously responsible for ensuring technology, data, people and process decisions deliver business value.
- Own and evolve the agile product vision and strategy for your Value Stream, ensuring alignment with business goals and customer needs.
- Represent the voice of the customer to the entire ART, manage and prioritize the continuous flow of work within the ART, and guide the ARTs to determine PI objectives.
- Translate strategy into actionable roadmaps and features, prioritizing for maximum business value.
- Manage the program backlog, breaking down epics into features and guiding APOs in story development.
- Drive feature road mapping and make recommendations and decisions to pivot, persevere, or prioritize.
- Ensure backlog health and readiness across multiple agile teams.
- Accept completed features that meet the definition of done and validate their alignment with the product vision.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead and mentor a team of Agile Product Owners, fostering growth and agile maturity.
- Partner with RTEs, Architects, Tech Leads, and business stakeholders to ensure delivery readiness and alignment.
- Validate that the solution and feature functionality meet the vision.
- Actively participate in team demos and system demos to ensure customer needs are met.
- Support epic refinement and decompose epics into features with clear acceptance criteria.
- Maintain change management plans and ensure stakeholder engagement throughout the product lifecycle.
Measurement & Optimization
- Monitor execution progress, benefit realization, and post-release optimization.
- Analyze program-level metrics to identify trends and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Evaluate business-level OKRs and KPIs to assess the impact of epics and features.
Agile Product Management Maturity
- Contribute to building Agile product management maturity across the portfolio.
- Support hiring, onboarding, and upskilling of APOs and other product roles.
What You Will Bring
- Expertise: 5+ years of experience in agile product ownership or management. Self-motivated with a track record of managing multiple priorities and making sound decisions. Experience using data to generate insights, test hypotheses, and drive customer-centric solutions.
- Leadership & Adaptable Mindset: Proven experience coaching and mentoring APOs and building agile product communities of practice.
- Fluency & Acumen: Proficiency in Agile frameworks (SAFe, Scrum, Kanban, XP) and tools like JIRA, Rally, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Familiarity with ADKAR or other change management frameworks.
- Collaborator & Influencer: Strong collaboration and influence skills with the ability to manage and negotiate across stakeholders. Effective in matrixed environments with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; insurance industry experience preferred.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
