ING is looking for a Competent COBOL/ PL1 DevOps Engineer (Application management)
An energetic, pro-active DevOps Engineer with a passion for IT. In this position you work within a squad of the Tribe Collections & Legacy BankBone(LBB) which is part of CIO NL.
The squad is a DevOps team responsible for replatformed Mainframe applications in a Microfocus environment. These applications service the business customers of ING:
- FIAT: this application provides 2nd line approval of payments transactions
- NRC (Nieuw Rekening Courant): Is used by the back office users in ING for managing the interest and overdraft fee conditions as well as the interest and balance set-off structure agreements.
You enjoy working together in a multidisciplinary team and at the same time you also find it important that you can use your own expertise.
You work according to the Scrum methodology and Continuous Delivery Engineering Practices. As a DevOps Engineer you contribute to realizing the purpose of the squad. You do this by working end-to-end Agile on the user stories from the Backlog.
Customer perspective is your primary drive to work in a squad.
This is what you will be doing:
As a DevOps Engineer you can manage the continuity of the applications which includes change-, incident and problem management. You develop and maintain Cobol / PL1 programs including database-, API-, JCL-, scheduling-, alerting- and MQ-components.
You maintain, test and deploy the application components.
You understand the stack for maintaining and running Cobol / PL1 applications on a MicroFocus Environment (Enterprise Server and Enterprise Developer).
You can contribute to the realization of all activities in the backlog.
Besides that, we need an engineer who is willing to gain knowledge of the business functionality of the FIAT and NRC application.
You work closely with other teams and take initiative in coordinating dependencies with others. Also you feel responsible for the quality and availability of our applications.

- As an experienced DevOps Engineer, you support others to be successful.
- You are responsible for the development of your own professional knowledge, and you apply it. You know where to get that knowledge and you actively ask for help from your IT Chapter Lead in your personal development.
- You are familiar with ING IT Risk processes and experienced in their implementation, administration, and monitoring.
Your work environment
Is an environment where very important business payment processes are supported with in house developed applications on a Microfocus platform. The functionalities supported by these systems, will be rebuilt in the near future and together with your colleagues you will help running this IT landscape and migrate towards target.
Working outside of office hours and standby is part of keeping the applications up and running.
Location: Amsterdam (Hybrid).
Who are you?
You are the all-round experienced DevOps engineer who finds it challenging to manage important business payment applications.
Knowledge of / experience with business payment processes. You are able to communicate efficiently with business partners.
- You have at least 5 years of recent experience with and knowledge of (banking) MicroFocus applications and at least 2 years of experience in managing the interest and overdraft fee conditions as well as the interest and balance set-off structure agreements and custom conditions. You are also familiar with 2nd line approval of payments transactions.
You have knowledge or extensive experience with:
- Competent level MicroFocus Enterprise Developer/Server and experience with ESCWA
- COBOL, PL/1, JCL, CICS and IMS-DC at competent level
- PowerShell (preference)
- Scheduling (UAC)
- Azure DevOps
- GIT
- MS SQL server databases / SQL queries
- MQ
- Testframeworks
- Risk for SoX critical applications
- Understand how your application fits into the entire chain of which it is part.
- You have experience in working within an Agile organization.
- You have experience in working within an IBM mainframe environment
- You have a good knowledge of the Dutch and English language, verbally and in writing.
