Description

Position Objective: The Student Assistant for Digitization, part of the Preservation Services Team, will support the library’s efforts to digitize and preserve various formats of library materials. Working under the guidance of the Head of Preservation Services & the  Digitization Specialist, the student will digitize bound and flat materials, transmissive films, and other specialized media. This role combines technical skills with attention to detail to enhance the accessibility and preservation of the library’s collections.

Primary Responsibilities: 
Operate scanners and other digitization equipment to convert physical library materials into digital formats. 
Perform post-processing tasks including image correction, formatting, and quality control to ensure digitized materials meet library standards. 
Assist in managing digital files, including naming, and storage. 
Contribute to the digitization workflow optimization by suggesting improvements and participating in new digitization projects. 
Handle fragile and rare library materials with care during the digitization process.
Assist with the setup and breakdown of digitization stations and equipment. 
May assist with training new student assistants and conducting digitization demonstrations for library tours.
 
Educational Value:

Hours Needed: 
Must be available to work 10-20 hours per week during the semester and potentially work up to 40 hours per week during the summer.

Qualifications

Required Skills:
Must possess strong computer skills and be comfortable operating technical imaging equipment and software. 
Attention to detail and a high standard of accuracy are essential for ensuring quality digital reproductions. 
Prior experience or coursework in photography, media production, or information technology is advantageous. 
Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team. 
Ability to follow complex instructions and adhere to digitization guidelines. 
This position involves moderate lifting of materials and extended periods of standing or sitting.
Strong interest in cameras/imaging technologies and associated software. 
Effective communication skills and ability to adhere to workflow procedures.
