General Description and Classification Standards:

Oversee the job functions responsible for golf course, landscaped area and building maintenance at two City of Atlanta Golf Courses; Chastain Park Golf Course and Candler Park Golf Course. Supervisory and training responsibilities over maintenance staff at those locations. Organizes, monitors, and supervises facility maintenance operations at a high experience level; performs a variety of technical skilled and unskilled tasks relative to golf course and facility maintenance; including, but not limited knowledge of irrigation repair, chemical and fertilizer applications, and best mowing practices. Reports directly to the General Manager, Golf Services. The successful candidate will be intrinsically motivated, possess a strong understanding of golf maintenance operations, and demonstrate the ability to anticipate needs, identify potential issues before they arise, and address them with foresight and professionalism.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Goal Development - Work with Senior Management to develop goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for assistant superintendents, mechanics, and golf maintenance crew members. 

Golf Course Maintenance - Develop, implement, and continuously improve golf course maintenance protocols, in collaboration with the other Superintendent and General Manager. Standardize procedures across courses to promote consistency and efficiency in mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and equipment use. Benchmark practices against industry standards and incorporate emerging technologies and methods to enhance performance and sustainability. Regularly assess the conditions of the golf maintenance to ensure that employees adhere to all established policies and procedures across golf course maintenance staff. 

Building Facilities Maintenance - Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all golf course buildings and support facilities to ensure they remain safe, clean, and operational. Conduct regular inspections of buildings (e.g., restrooms, maintenance sheds, storage areas) to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns. Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal team for timely repairs, preventative maintenance, and capital improvements. Ensure compliance with all relevant building codes, safety regulations, and City standards. Maintain facility-related documentation, including maintenance schedules, inspection logs, and service records.

Supply & Equipment Management - Oversee the selection, inventory, and presentation of equipment, fertilizers, and chemicals; work with vendors to procure high-quality products according to the City’s procurement procedures and maintain stock levels to meet needs of the golf course. 

Employee Oversight -  Monitor the performance, schedules, and attendance of golf maintenance employees, including assistant superintendents, mechanics, and maintenance crew members; ensure assigned tasks are completed on time, efficiently, and according to standards; responsible for performance evaluations and corrective actions needed for assistant superintendents, mechanics, and maintenance crew members.

Payroll -Oversee the payroll process for all golf maintenance staff at the assigned facilities, ensuring accurate and timely processing of employee compensation.

Training and Support -  Develop and implement training programs for direct reports; identify opportunities for professional development of direct reports; provide ongoing training, direction, supervision, and evaluation, and address performance issues when required; conduct regularly scheduled meetings with direct reports. 

Metrics Tracking + Reporting - Track and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) related to course conditions, maintenance schedules, equipment usage, staff productivity, and budget adherence. Generate regular reports to inform decision-making and ensure accountability. Use data insights to identify areas for improvement, drive operational efficiency, and support strategic planning for long-term course health and performance.

Communication -  Maintain consistent and proactive communication with the General Manager, fellow Superintendent, and other key stakeholders to ensure alignment on golf course maintenance operations. Prepare and disseminate timely updates to staff regarding changes in procedures, priorities, or maintenance schedules. Coordinate with team members and management to ensure all relevant parties are informed and working collaboratively toward shared goals.

Budget Management -  Assist in budget preparation, analysis, and administration for golf maintenance; assist with analyzing and preparing reports on the budget status of golf maintenance activities; forecast golf maintenance budgetary needs. Program Support: Implement and support all initiatives and programs as directed by management.

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent.

At least five (5) years of experience as Superintendent (or related maintenance supervisory role) in public or private golf course maintenance required. 

 

Preferred Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy, or a related field 

 

Licensures and Certifications:

Valid state driver’s license required. Pesticide applicator’s license required.
