Arlington County Department of Human Services is seeking a Public Health Nurse in the Community Health Services Bureau of the Public Health Division. The programs in the Bureau provide a range of services to improve and maintain the overall health of clients and prevent and control disease burden in the community. Programs provide clinical care and case management, including active and latent Tuberculosis (TB), Newcomer Health (refugee) services, and services for Family Planning, Immunizations, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), which include testing for HIV and other STIs).

The Public Health Nurse (Community Health Bureau) works with a multidisciplinary team providing services in clinical and home settings in addition to public health outreach in the community. The clinics and programs serve an ethnically and culturally diverse population. Approximately 65% of clients are Spanish speaking, some with limited English proficiency.

This position will focus on case management of clients in the TB and Newcomer Health Programs. Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluates, screens, and tests clients with confirmed and presumptive TB;
  • Performs health assessments and screenings for clients as part of the Newcomer Health program (refugees);
  • Provides health education to clients, families, and the community;
  • Collaborates with a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, public health nurse coordinators and outreach workers in the treatment and case management of clients;
  • Refers clients to County and community resources;
  • Performs epidemiological investigations of TB in the community;
  • Participates in quality assurance activities;
  • Maintains records and documentation to meet local, state, and federal requirements; 
  • Participates in community emergency preparedness events and education.

Minimums:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing; 
  • Some experience as a Registered Nurse (RN); and
  • Licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the state of Virginia*.

*If eligible from another state, the selected candidate will be allowed 60 days to obtain Virginia license.

Substitution: Education may be substituted by additional directly related full-time experience on a year for year basis.

Desirables: Preference maybe given to candidates with additional background and/or experience including:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Public Health or a related field;
  • Public Health/Community Health work experience; and/or
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish or another language

Special Requirements

Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Must complete pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check.

 

Employment restrictions: To ensure that dual relationships are avoided and that employees who are also clients do not relate to their service provider as co-professionals, employees will not be hired by the County to provide or support services to the team or program in which they are current clients:

You cannot concurrently receive behavioral health services from Arlington County Community Service Board (CSB) programs while employed in an Arlington County CSB program (exception Crisis Intervention services).

At least 24 months must have passed between receipt of CSB services from Arlington County and employment in an Arlington County CSB program.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Forty hours per week. Flexible schedule Monday through Friday within core hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Evening hours are required weekly to cover evening clinics.

 

Working Conditions:

  • The applicant must be available to work after hours and in emergency situations.

  • The applicant has potential exposure to infectious diseases.
