Job description

To strengthen the JMA(Japan Medical Affairs) and adapt to and transform for upcoming new product lines, we are seeking a candidate who can lead innovation and performance and leverage digital initiatives. This position aims to maximize the outcomes and capabilities of the JMA as a priority country of the CPO(Chief Patient Officer)organization, closely collaborating with global, regional and Japan strategies, and being responsible for the innovation and execution of medical strategies.

Key responsibilities

Team Leadership & Matrix Management 

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the medical team as JMALT, including second-line managers within a complex, matrixed organization. 
  • Foster a high-performance, collaborative culture while ensuring team alignment with the broader vision and goals. 
  • Support capability building, career development, and succession planning to elevate leadership across levels. 

Change & Transformation Leadership 

  • Lead change initiatives across medical functions, driving new systems, structures, and ways of working. 
  • Implement comprehensive change management plans, including stakeholder engagement and communication strategies. 
  • Promote adaptability, clarity, and stability during periods of transformation in a dynamic, cross-functional environment. 

Strategic Value Maximization with Launch & Governance Excellence 

  • Serve as the secretariat for Japan strategy reviews and Medical/GAMA pre-approval activities to ensure asset value is maximized and governance is robust in the pre-approval phase. 
  • Drive launch readiness initiatives with an enterprise mindset, ensuring optimal preparation and flawless execution. 
  • Ensure timely coordination, preparation, and documentation of key decision-making processes and strategic reviews. 

Medical Governance & Strategic Oversight 

  • Ensure proactive and effective medical governance aligned with GSK global/regional standards and local regulations. 
  • Implement risk management procedures that safeguard medical operations while linking governance to strategic priorities. 
  • Act as a bridge between governance models and asset-level decision-making. 

Medical Project Management & Data Generation 

  • Oversee execution and delivery of medical projects through the Japan Medical Affairs Team (JMT), ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and timelines. 
  • Develop robust project management frameworks and lead the secretariat function of the Data Generation Forum to support resource allocation across Medical, RWE, and R&D. 

Digital Enablement & Information Strategy 

  • Drive adoption of digital platforms and tools that enhance medical capabilities and decision-making. 
  • Promote a culture of digital innovation and process improvement. 
  • Oversee outsourcing strategies and vendor partnerships for medical information management, ensuring high quality and operational efficiency. 

Performance & Capability Management 

  • Establish performance frameworks to drive continuous improvement across key medical functions. 
  • Utilize KPIs and data analytics to track and evaluate team and departmental performance, including JMA IPTc. 
  • Collaborate with global medical training teams to address capability gaps and elevate functional excellence. 


 

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in medical affairs, portfolio strategy, product launch management, or a related field within the pharmaceutical industry 
  • Proven leadership experience in complex matrixed organizations, including second-line management of multiple reporting units, with a demonstrated ability to align priorities, drive cross-functional initiatives, and collaborate across departments and geographies. 
  • Demonstrated success in facilitating strategic discussions and managing end-to-end launch strategies. 
  • Broad experience across project management, development, and medical domains. 
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels in both English and Japanese 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Life Sciences, or a related field is required. 
  • An advanced degree (MBA, MSc, MD or Ph.D.) is preferred. 
  • Business transformation and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus.
