Job Profile Summary

The Environmental Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and delivering environmental capital projects across North America, with a focus on initiatives ranging from targeted line replacements to full underground storage tank (UST) system replacements. This position ensures that all projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local environmental regulations. Serving as the primary point of contact for assigned projects, the Environmental Project Manager will coordinate closely with internal stakeholders, contractors, vendors, and regulatory agencies. Reporting to the Director, North America Environmental, this role requires a hands-on approach to project management, technical expertise in fueling infrastructure, and the ability to manage multiple complex projects while maintaining high standards of compliance and operational excellence.

Job Description

  • Project Leadership & Delivery: Lead the planning, scheduling, and execution of environmental capital projects, including line replacements, containment system upgrades, and full UST system replacements.
  • Scope & Budget Management: Develop and manage project scopes, budgets, and schedules; ensure that work is delivered on time and within approved capital allocations.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all project activities meet applicable environmental regulations, permitting requirements, and company standards. Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies during inspections and permitting processes.
  • Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate with Environmental Compliance, Facilities, Operations, Construction, and Finance teams to align project plans with operational needs and business objectives.
  • Vendor Oversight: Manage contractors and consultants throughout project lifecycles, ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and compliance standards. Conduct performance evaluations and hold vendors accountable for deliverables.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential project risks, develop mitigation strategies, and adjust project plans to address unforeseen challenges or regulatory changes.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed project records for internal audits and regulatory requirements. Provide regular progress updates, budget tracking, and performance reporting to leadership.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities to enhance project delivery efficiency, cost control, and compliance outcomes.
  • Technical Expertise: Apply knowledge of UST systems, piping, containment systems, and related infrastructure to support decision-making and problem-solving throughout project lifecycles.
  • Safety & Quality Assurance: Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company safety policies, quality standards, and environmental best-practices.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in environmental project management, preferably in retail fueling or petroleum system construction/replacement.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of UST systems, piping, dispensers, containment systems, and related regulatory requirements.
  • Project Management Skills: Proven success in managing multiple large-scale projects from planning through completion; PMP or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Vendor Management: Demonstrated ability to manage contractors, negotiate contracts, and oversee multi-vendor projects.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and local environmental regulations; experience with permitting processes.
  • Financial Acumen: Ability to develop budgets, track costs, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with project tracking tools (e.g., Smartsheet, Power BI) preferred.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and influence outcomes.
  • Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel up to 50% across North America to oversee project work and engage with stakeholders.
  • Adaptability: Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
