Position Overview
The Digital Engagement Specialist plays a key role in fostering a thriving faculty community around online and digitally enhanced education at Butler University. Blending faculty development, digital communications, and learning design support, this role advances teaching excellence, accessibility, and innovation across modalities. The Specialist leads the planning, maintenance, and promotion of faculty-facing spaces and resources—such as the OEET website, newsletter, and professional development campaigns—while supporting inclusive instructional design and ethical digital teaching practices.
Responsibilities
- Faculty Engagement & Development:
Provide direct consultation and support to faculty in the use of educational technologies and the development of accessible, high-quality instructional practices. Plan, promote, and facilitate development opportunities including workshops, webinars, short courses, and learning communities. Support the design and delivery of asynchronous training such as Butler’s Online Faculty Orientation (OFO), and contribute to ongoing strategies like Faculty-Led Short Courses (FSLCs) and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) initiatives. Collaborate on efforts that foster faculty connection, recognition, and sustained professional growth.
- Digital Communications & Resource Management:
Maintain and update OEET’s website, ensuring clarity, relevance, and alignment with institutional priorities; create and coordinate the distribution of OEET’s monthly faculty newsletter; manage marketing and scheduling for faculty development campaigns and events; develop strategies to promote instructional tools and best practices.
- Pedagogical & Technological Integration:
Advocate for accessible learning design, including UDL principles, PDF remediation, and WCAG compliance; promote ethical and responsible use of generative AI in teaching and learning; collaborate with instructional designers and technologists to support implementation of online course quality standards (e.g., QM Essentials); curate and share tools and templates to enhance online and digitally enhanced instruction.
- Professional Development & Engagement:
Remain current on educational technologies and trends in digital pedagogy, instructional design, and communications; actively participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to a culture of continuous learning within OEET.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, education, communications, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience in educational communications, faculty training, or instructional support
- Strong written and verbal communication skills across formats (e.g., web, promotional content, strategic messaging)
- Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), educational technology, and accessibility best practices
- Ability to manage projects collaboratively and independently with strong organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related field
- Experience designing or facilitating asynchronous learning experiences
- Understanding of Quality Matters (QM), UDL, and accessible instructional design standards
- Knowledge of generative AI tools and their pedagogical applications
- Experience working in higher education, especially with online, adult, or nontraditional learners
- Demonstrated interest in faculty recognition, instructional excellence, or scholarship of teaching and learning
