Description
GENERAL SUMMARY
Performs a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic medical lab tests as requested by healthcare staff according to established protocols and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Order required testing, label, and process specimens in an accurately and timely fashion.
- Exercises independent judgment in dealing with procedural and technical problems.
- Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
- Adherence to CAP (College of American Pathologists), CLIA (Clinica Laboratory Improvement Amendments), State Regulations, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability), Safety and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Regulations.
- Participates in educational activities.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Performs most clerical duites in the laboratory.
- Accesses specimens and assures that the forms are prepared correctly for all ordered tests. Assures that specimens for referral are place in the proper place for pick-up by the reference laboratory.
- Performs daily start-up and maintenance procedures required for each piece of laboratory equipment and documents on the proper log that these procedures have been performed.
- Prepares reagents required for each test performed .
- Runs controls and standards as required for each test.
- Performs Quality Control Testing noting corrective action taken as needed. Notifies laboratory manager if a control problem cannot be solved.
- Monitors equipment and room temperatures daily.
- Performs proficiency testing as if arrives in a manner consistent with patient testing and reports results to lab supervisor.
- Performs all requested tests in a timely manner, given priority to “STATS.”
- Assists the clinic staff and physicians in retrieving patient test results or answering technical questions about tests performed.
- Check patients results to assure quality of reported results.
- Is aware of laboratory “panic” values and notifies the physician according to protocol of all values that fall within the “panic” value range.
- Documents correctly all work accomplished and all results obtained.
- Performs other position related duties as assigned.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS
- BLS certification required, ACLS preferred.
- ASCP Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES
- Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with team members, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
- Ability to accession specimens.
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
- Ability to multi task.
- Complies with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality.
- Complies with all health and safety policies of the organization.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Medical laboratory technician: 1 year (Required).
