About this opportunity:

Cenovus Energy is seeking a Mass Balance and Energy Optimization Engineer who stewards the Lima Refinery and individual operating unit mass balance. The responsibility of this position includes the running and sustainment of modeling software to monitor balances, identify flow instrumentation in error, follows up with driving maintenance priorities or project development to correct errors and generation of a reconciled refinery mass balance. In addition, this role will liaison with the refinery commercial team to keep abreast of refinery margin conditions and pricing updates. This position is expected to drive commercial objectives of the process engineering team within operating plans and optimizing margin capture against energy cost and operating constraints.

What you’ll do:

  • Sustain refinery wide mass balance model to statistically identify meters in gross error

  • Engage refinery business and maintenance teams to prioritize meter repairs

  • Coordinates with yield analyst to track and report monthly mass loss identified in commercial reporting. Identifies and acts on opportunities to minimize hydrocarbon loss through either improved operation or project development

  • Leads refinery initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

  • Effective at influencing process unit energy optimization without direct authority

  • Leverage refinery holistic view to drive business unit process engineer optimization of their units to right size energy consumption and minimize product giveaway

  • Integrate with refinery commercial group to stay abreast of market and refinery market conditions and keep the process engineering team priorities aligned

  • Maintain pricing references for the process engineering team to be used for daily optimization and project evaluations

Who you are:

  • Legally authorized to work in the US

  • Chemical Engineering degree required

  • 4+ years of refinery or related process unit experience with a wide range of refinery operating units, their operating conditions, stream qualities and yields

  • Process simulation such as Hysys, Petrosim and Romeo

  • Working knowledge of instrumentation and malfunction mechanisms

  • Experience with PI and PI Asset Framework

  • Some level coding to facilitate automation of data collection and analysis

  • Excels at influencing without authority to convince business units to spend their budget money on your initiatives
