About the Position
The Fashion Designer, Shorts, Pants, Outerwear is responsible for the fashion design and development of shorts, pants, and outerwear seasonal styles that delight the consumer, have high full price sell throughs, and contribute to the profitable growth of the company. The goal is to increase full price net sales and contribute to the growth of total company Profit Before Tax (PBT).
A day in the life…
Understand the Lilly Pulitzer® customer, lifestyle, and positioning in the marketplace.
Know and appreciate the Lilly Pulitzer® customer. This includes understanding the taste, fashion and lifestyle preferences and characteristics of the customer. Recognize why the customer purchases Lilly Pulitzer® merchandise instead of competing products. Translate this into products that delight the customer and have high sell through.
Visit firsthand locations where Lilly Pulitzer® customer lives the lifestyle and shops for Lilly Pulitzer® merchandise.
Spend sufficient time in retails stores and online to understand the customer, merchandise, and marketplace. Visit Lilly Pulitzer® stores; understand what is selling at retail, and competitive trends.
Protect and innovate in core franchise styles, collaborating with merchandising to manage the life cycle. Apply subtle design updates as needed.
Develop innovative apparel fashion designs that delight the Lilly Pulitzer® customer, increasing total full price net sales through high full price sell throughs and contribute to the profitable growth of the company.
Understand washed product to partner with cross functional teams to make sure appropriate washes are on garments to improve consumer experience.
Understand how certain design elements, including selection of fabrics, yarns, and trim, affect the cost of the merchandise. Understand the target price point ranges for the merchandise offerings. This must be done in conjunction with production and merchandising. Make recommendations on fabrics and trim to achieve the target price points.
Prepare the elements necessary to develop seasonal merchandise offerings for the assigned portions of the line. This may include Fabric and trim selection; creating trend reports focused by categories 5 hero fabrics; design silhouettes; design boards, assortments, and the related fashion illustrations; silhouette assortment by print and color; request for prototype samples; maintaining wash leg development and approvals; and maintaining and creating all digital or physical assets as requested by management, including master boards, category boards, seasonal product highlights or any other visual needed.
Initiate and maintain throughout product development calendar all styles for the assigned portions of the line in PLM. Each style in the line needs to have proper Bill of Materials created and passed off to Technical Design and Product Development each season and at each stage.
Meet all assigned dates in the seasonal product development calendar and all adjacent product calendars.
Work closely with Product Development, Technical Design, Print Design and Merchandising to develop successful product.
Work closely with Product Development to develop prototype samples that lead to product meets IMU goals, is adopted into the line and sell-through successfully at retail.
Work closely and timely with Technical Design in the development and review of apparel technical design specification packages, clearly communicating the design intention of each style.
Work closely with Technical Design to ensure new styles are developed off best-selling core block fits and specs remain consistent across core bodies.
Work closely with Print Design to understand color and print stories for each delivery. Work with print design for novelty artwork specific to individual products.
Study gross profit contribution for categories by fabric platform. Goal is to have 50% of category net sales and gross profit come from 5 or less fabrics. Study where fabrics can be utilized across categories.
Work closely with Merchandising to understand the product strategy; annual, seasonal, and monthly. This includes wholesale and retail selling analysis, consumer end use and pricing targets. Work with Merchandising to understand necessary product assortments to meet or exceed sales plans.
Travel as necessary on overseas development and sourcing trips to trade shows and factories to research and design market superior product

Qualifications for the Position
A four-year college degree is required, preferably with a major in fashion design.
A minimum of 5 to 7 years of women’s fashion design experience, preferably in the fashion or retail industry.
Must have genuine excitement for the Lilly Pulitzer® concept and he must share the vision for the merchandise and the lifestyle, consistent with the positioning in the marketplace.
Must have the taste level and fashion sense to understand the Lilly Pulitzer® customer and to design fashion apparel which appeals to the Lilly customer and sells.
Needs to understand and appreciate the brand and the customer.
Must have proficient technical and aesthetic skills in fashion design, silhouette development, fashion illustration and technical design.
Understanding and experience in washed product preferred.
Must have an appreciation for print, pattern, and color, and understand how print, pattern and color translate effectively to fabrics and silhouettes.
Must have skilled knowledge of women’s sportswear, particularly for the contemporary market.
Must be comfortable with a broad range of life stage segmentations of the customer.
Needs the creativity and courage to develop fashion trends and a fashion collection, balanced with the pragmatism to create commercially successful merchandise.
Must have the ability to interact effectively with several other departments, including Merchandising, Product Development, Production and Marketing.
Must be assertive enough for good design ideas to become executed. This includes influencing print, pattern, and color.
Must have sufficient knowledge of construction, fit and fabric characteristics to be able to perform fittings with technical design to make sure that the actual merchandise has the same look and feel as intended. This includes understanding technical specification packages, fit and grade rules.
Must have comfort working with the lead times and capabilities of a production system which is sub-contracted, primarily overseas.
Strong knowledge of the quality, make, and production integrity appropriate for Lilly Pulitzer® merchandise.
Sound thinking necessary to accomplish detailed, complex tasks, as well as the ability to anticipate potential problems and provide effective solutions.
The sense of urgency necessary in the apparel industry is required.

A Little More to Know…
This position is classified as full-time salaried; it is exempt and is not eligible for overtime. This position is eligible for standard company benefits.
This position is required to maintain a structured hybrid work schedule based out of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. This hybrid schedule, which includes work done in the King of Prussia Office as well as your Home Office will be determined by your supervisor.
The position requires some domestic and international travel.
Given the seasonality of the business, this position may require flexible, additional working hours during peak periods.
