Description

The Medical Billing Specialist plays a key role in ensuring accurate and timely billing for client services. This position is responsible for processing claims efficiently, recording and reconciling payments from all sources, and proactively working to maximize revenue while minimizing denied or uncollectible claims. 


Position Title: Medical Billing Specialist

Department: Finance

Hours: Full-time 40 hours/week, Monday – Friday (Non-Exempt)

Location: Lifeworks Services – Richfield / 20% in-person

Compensation: $30 - $32 per hour

  • Must pass a background study with the Department of Human Services, a drug test, clean driving record and have reliable transportation to use for work driving purposes (e.g., in-office, on-site training locations, etc.).


How you’ll be spending your time:

  • Preparing and timely submitting billing (medical claims) biweekly, ensuring all necessary information is accurate and complete.
  • Researching any unprocessed claims and correcting any errors required to submit claims for payment.
  • Reviewing denials or partially paid claims and working with any involved parties to resolve any issues until the claim can be resubmitted and paid.
  • Reconciling and applying payments biweekly and handling any outstanding balances promptly.
  • Preparing weekly aging reports and prioritizing accounts for collection.
  • Maintaining detailed documentation on efforts to resolve uncollected claims and escalating to management timely.
  • Consulting with managers, team members, program leaders, and other internal and external resources to solve billing and collection questions.
  • Maintaining outstanding balances including over 90-days balance less than 5% of total outstanding balance.
  • Identifying and recommending uncollectible claims for write-off to management monthly.
  • Managing other account receivable billing and collection of payments for non-medical billing as needed.
  • Entering and reconciling cash receipts and recording invoice payments.
  • Providing backup for other positions within the accounting department as needed.
  • Staying current on all relevant program service rules and requirements as it relates to medical billing.
  • Adhering to obligations under HIPAA and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Following safety procedures and assisting in identifying safety needs for self and others.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in healthcare administration, accounting, or business with two years of medical claims billing experience or High School Diploma/GED and Certified Professional Biller with 2 years of experience or a combination of education and experience equal to 6 years.
  • Experience billing through electronic health records (EHR) or other medical billing software systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel
  • Fluent in English, verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
