Histology Technologist II

Full-time, M-F 11 AM to 7:30 PM

Job Summary

Performs routine testing in a high complexity clinical diagnostic laboratory. Responsible for receipt of patient samples as well as the preparation of samples for microscopic examination and analysis by Pathology. Troubleshoots on-hold cases and collaborates with the wider Laboratory Operations team to move samples effectively through the workflow. Also focuses on cutting, mounting, staining, and batching slides. Can work independently and work more complex samples


 

Qualifications

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)

  • Trains new technologists on proper procedures and techniques, evaluates new technology for clinical application and assists in updating procedure manuals for laboratory inspections and accreditations.

  • Receives blocks, helps account for all blocks received, helps with any problems associated with slides and blocks.

  • Makes sure the work is done in the assigned area, such as histology, special stains, neuropath, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry.

  • Determines when prescribed techniques and apparatus should be modified in order to meet required quality standards.

  • Maintains quality control logs and monitors daily completion of logs

  • Responsible for quality control of all reagents

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree Required.

  • HT or HTL (ASCP) certification, or eligibility preferred

  • Graduate of an NCCLS-approved school of Histotechnology preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of histology experience required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to correctly and accurately embed all human tissue to include skin and or animal tissues.

  • Must follow minimum national cutting standards of 50 blocks per hour embedding and 30 slides per hour cutting.

  • Must be able cut artifact free two micrometer sections.

  • Must be able to competently perform all special and immunohistochemistry stains with minimum supervision using both manual and automated methodologies.

  • Must be able to impart this knowledge to others including junior technical or clerical staff and residents.
