Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides for patient's personal hygiene and daily living. This may include providing and clearing bedpans and urinals, providing baths, backrubs, shampoos and shaves, and assisting patients with showers. Assists with meals and feeds patients. Ambulates, turns and positions patients. Provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.
- Administers enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz and therapeutic baths, and applies restraints.
- Performs patient admissions; checks vital signs and weight; performs sugar and acetone urine testing, specimen collection, and post-mortem care.
- Communicates with and keeps professional nurse informed on unit activities, needs and problems related to patient care.
- Informs professional nurse and Unit Secretary of time of patient transfer and discharge.
- Answers call lights promptly.
- Records patient information regarding Activities of Daily Living (ADL).
- Uses Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system to enter and document orders.
- Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees. Maintains good working relations with nursing unit staff and other hospital employees through appropriate communication.
- Instills confidence in patients by maintaining a neat appearance and performing duties in a competent and caring manner. Reports observations of patients to the nurse caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment.
- With specialized training and written approval, may perform additional and specialized tasks pertinent to the assigned area.
- Assists in patient teaching assignments.
- Completes all CEU’s as required by respective licensure. If licensed, maintains an active and current license.
- Maintains friendly and courteous interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.
- Participates in performance improvement and educational activities.
- Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.
- Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.
- Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.
- Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
- Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.
- Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.
- Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.
- Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Successful completion of nursing assistant course or equivalent.
- Has successfully passed the competency and skills tests to be eligible for state registry.
- Previous hospital experience preferred.
Position Requirements, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Basic Life Support certification within three months of hire.
- Ability to create a caring, compassionate relationship with the patients and families.
- Shows dependability by being punctual; maintains consistent attendance.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients and co-workers; transports patients and equipment as appropriate.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, patients, families and other employees or the organization.
