ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Health & Safety Professional to join our team supporting the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory! This position is full-time and will be based out of Livermore, California.
The Health & Safety Professional plays a critical role in supporting safe and compliant execution of characterization, remediation, and decontamination & decommissioning (D&D) projects at an active U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facility. This position focuses on the implementation, oversight, and continuous improvement of safety programs in facilities with potential beryllium, asbestos, and radiological hazards, including Category 3 nuclear facilities. The Health & Safety Professional will work directly with project management, field crews, and client representatives to ensure that all activities meet or exceed regulatory, contractual, and site-specific safety requirements.
Responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety and health plans tailored to DOE facility operations and LLNL site procedures.
Oversee compliance with beryllium safety programs (29 CFR 1910.1024, DOE beryllium rule 10 CFR 850) and asbestos abatement standards (29 CFR 1926.1101), ensuring all work practices are consistent with regulatory requirements and best industry practices.
Conduct daily field safety inspections of work sites involving potential beryllium and radiological contamination; verify controls are in place and effective.
Ensure proper hazard recognition, risk assessments, and mitigation measures are implemented prior to and during field activities.
Monitor PPE use, respiratory protection, and decontamination procedures to ensure personnel safety and contamination control.
Ensure chain-of-custody documentation, sample handling protocols, and laboratory submittals meet site and regulatory standards.
Coordinate with industrial hygiene and radiological control personnel to interpret sample results and recommend corrective actions.
Prepare clear, accurate, and timely reports for internal use, client review, and regulatory submittal.
Maintain up-to-date records of inspections, monitoring results, incident investigations, corrective actions, and training compliance.
Support DOE, OSHA, EPA, and state regulatory audits or inspections, including providing documentation and responding to findings.
Lead or assist in investigations of safety incidents, near misses, and non-conformance events.
Develop corrective action plans, track closure of findings, and integrate lessons learned into future work planning.
Serve as an emergency response liaison during incidents involving hazardous materials or radiological contamination.
Interface daily with field crews, project managers, site safety officers, client representatives, and DOE oversight personnel.
Provide safety briefings, toolbox talks, and targeted safety training for crews working in hazardous environments.
Translate complex safety requirements into clear, actionable guidance for field personnel at all levels.
Requirements
Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree and 10+ years of experience in the supporting of characterization, remediation, and D&D of facilities with potential beryllium and radiological contamination at active DOE sites.
Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
Demonstrated experience working under both beryllium and asbestos abatement programs, including implementing exposure controls and verifying compliance.
Strong background in environmental and radiological sampling and characterization across all project phases, with experience in Category 3 nuclear facilities.
Proven ability to prepare accurate, detailed safety reports and communicate findings effectively to multiple stakeholders.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across various organizational levels and with multiple clients.
Desired Skills
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent professional credential.
DOE Radiological Worker II, HAZWOPER 40-hour, and Beryllium Worker Safety Training certifications.
Proficiency in safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.

The NNSA's Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), located in Los Alamos, New Mexico, is a design laboratory responsible for the safety and reliability of the nuclear explosives package in nuclear weapons. This lab possesses unique capabilities in neutron scattering, enhanced surveillance, radiography, and plutonium science and engineering (energy.gov).
