ABOUT THIS JOB
Position Specific Summary
The Environmental Services Worker position at the City of Tucson’s Environmental Services Department supports the operations of refuse collections for the safe, efficient, and responsible collection and disposal of refuse, trash, debris, food waste, and recyclables. This position inspects equipment to ensure proper operations, maintains transfer stations, assists with delivering and exchanging refuse containers, and provides excellent customer service.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serves as a spotter by directing various vehicles and refuse units to appropriate locations by determining load contents and size while watching for prohibited or hazardous items. Performs random inspections on residential and commercial customer refuse drop offs, completes forms describing items included in drop off loads, verifies items by taking pictures, and may need to reject or remove items from loads. Communicates directions for disposal with operators and customers to prevent hazards and accidents. Provides transportation for operators to various reporting sites at the Los Reales Sustainability Campus to avoid injury or accidents.
Receives work orders to pick up damaged containers, drop off replacement or new containers to customers, and ensures completion of requests. Assists with delivering, exchanging and maintaining disposal containers for customers. Cleans debris from the interior of containers, removes loose paint from the exterior, assembles and disassembles containers for washing and sanitizing, and paints repaired and newly fabricated containers.
Collects, loads and disposes of refuse, trash, debris, food waste, green waste, and recyclables. Maintains City properties by removing weeds and trimming overgrown brushes and trees. Collaborates with crew members, Tucson Police Department, and Outreach teams to safely and effectively clean up encampments.
Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of City vehicles when necessary, maintains cleanliness of interior and exterior, and operates vehicles in accordance with federal, state, local, and City of Tucson requirements. Abides by the City of Tucson’s safety standards while driving and if servicing containers or brush and bulky items.
Provides courteous and professional assistance to customers related to refuse collections or other services and provides relevant resources and information as requested.
Performs all other duties and tasks assigned. Participates and cooperates in scheduled trainings, briefings, and meetings.
Working Conditions:
Reporting locations at Thomas O. Price Service Center or Los Reales Sustainability Campus.
Work schedule may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Often works under the following conditions: exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but not limited to dirt, grime, chemical, loud noise, unfavorable odors, and adverse weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Experience: No experience
License/Certifications: A valid and unrestricted driver’s license with two (2) years of licensed driving is required
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in solid waste collection, recycling, or related environmental services operations.
Experience in collecting, handling, sorting, and disposing of hazardous waste.
Experience operating trailers and other heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
Experience and knowledge of safety precautions required when handling heavy equipment, tools, and machinery in a public environment.
Experience following delivery routes and using routing systems.
