Primary Focus
The Copy Editor–Reviser ensures the level of writing in scientific and non-scientific reports and documents is consistent and of high quality. This involves adhering to the corporate style guide and promoting its use throughout the organization. The Copy Editor–Reviser is responsible for editing, revising, and proofreading reports and documents and for training external contractors and reviewing their work.

What do the daily responsibilities look like?
On any given day, the Copy Editor–Reviser will be responsible for:
• copy edit written materials for proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and adherence to the corporate style guide
• edit reports and documents to ensure the intended meaning is clear, the level of writing is appropriate for the target audience, and the style is consistent with the corporate style guide
• revise the work of internal editors and external contractors; ensure proposed edits have not changed meaning and maintain a consistent style, tone, and language; review edits with tracked changes in documents; and answer editing and content-related questions
• quality check documents after formatting
• ensure PerfectIt Pro is consistent with the corporate style guide, the Canadian Oxford Dictionary, and other reference guides
• explain, negotiate, and reach agreement on editing changes with document authors
• promote the use and understanding of the corporate style guide across the organization and provide advice and assistance to staff and contract editors on writing and style questions not covered in the guide
• participate in the management of external contract editors:

• train contract editors on the house style and internal processes
• revise the work of contract editors and provide regular feedback on performance
• ensure the guidelines for the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act are adhered to in published documents (e.g., for tables, figures, colours).

Is this the right role for you?
The Copy Editor–Reviser will likely have:
• a university degree in English, journalism, or life sciences plus a minimum of 5 years of editorial experience editing scientific or academic material, or the equivalent experience
• excellent skills in editing scientific material, including tables and figures, for a variety of audience types
• advanced knowledge of the English language and grammar and advanced writing and communications skills
• a strong eye for consistency, accuracy, and design layout
• experience with and knowledge of industry standards in scientific editing (e.g., AMA Manual of Style)
• knowledge of terminology related to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility
• comfort working with technology and editing-related software, including MS Word, Adobe Acrobat, and PerfectIt Pro
• meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to concentrate for long periods of time
• excellent organizational and time management skills to work on multiple projects simultaneously, meet tight deadlines, and monitor and report on project statuses
• experience working with academics (researchers or scientists) as authors
• the ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with internal and external colleagues, discuss projects, provide feedback, and collaborate and negotiate to resolve challenges
• the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
